Technology has come a long way since the '60's:

For a EU company I trialed lure that had the hooks on a recoil wire so teeth wouldn't damage the lure during the fight, another that had a water activated strobe light inside and a third that would take a fish scented capsule to enhance attraction.
None were any improvement on a basic lure.
The Crystal Minnow that takes a light stick can certainly improve Bass catches at night.
