Does this #3 etc meant the rings are 3mm in diameter?

Not to mention that Yanks don't like metric measurements. Maybe it means 3 somethings of an inch? :laughs:

Owner Split rings.
Size ID (Inside diameter in mm)
#4 = 5
#5 = 5.5
#6 = 6
#7 = 7

Although many companies in Japan use Imperial Owner uses Metric for ID but lists ring loads in both lbs and kg.

The best split ring pliers I have used were (are) the ones Tony Perrin of Landa Lures used to have made (I think from standard smooth jawed pliers) and gave me a worn pair. They are even more worn now, and I've re-filed the 'slot' once or twice. They easier to use and work far better than the usual design. I've never seen any others like them.

Funnily enough Dave I have already decided that once my pliers from Chico's arrive I am going to try and convert my existing ones into something finer by grinding down the hook nose bit. They are basically too blunt. They're ok for the larger rings but as mentioned yesterday they damage the rings on some of the cheaper lures.

They were never available for sale, Chris. Tony had them made for his outworkers to use. He used to call in at Chorley Anglers once a week or so to top up the Landa display (his unit was a few streets away) and that's when I blagged the pair I have from him.

Hi Chris
# 3 is the smallest Ive seen, they would be small enough to meet your 4mm ID spec. But beware, you would need good pliers to open them.

FYI The very best 2&3mm rings I have ever seen and used are those fitted to the Meggabass Vision 110 lures.
For such a tiny ring (2mm ID) they are even difficult to split let alone open wide enough to accept a hook ring.

Owner Oval split rings I have used for over 20years and are my preferred shape.
Owner and also Decoy make Egg shaped rings, I have used the latter in the HD versions and they are excellent for extreme situations.

A big thankyou to all you chaps who reccomended Chico's pliers. They were waiting for me at work when I took the truck back tonight and they are exactly what I wanted! I've already tried them on a 3mm split ring and it was a doddle! I have no doubt at all that they will handle all my micro needs. If there were any smaller split rings I wouldn't be able to see them anyway. :laughs:

Big up to the folk on the Pit!

Have you considered heat treating them, easy enough over a gas hob. It should eliminate the need to re-shape/file them
