Re: Jig flies set up
I use a 7 foot St Croix spinning rod rated to about 25g, 3000 sized reel with 20lb braid.
Most of my jig flies are on 6g heads, but they obviously weigh a lot more when wet.

Re: Jig flies set up
I prefer a 7-8' fast actioned rod rated to 25 or 30g, paired with a lightweight 4000 sized reel loaded with 8 strand 20lb braid.
Don't be fooled into thinking a lighter rod will be ok because jigflies don't weigh anything, if your rods too light, when you try to impart action with a rod twitch, the rod bends and the fly does very little!

The gunki will be fine, they're well built rods.

Prime piking jigfly time around now IMO, with water still clear and weed beginning to die back to fish over...

Are these 30g rods capable of handling a decent fish in a river?

I’ve landed mid doubles on a light jigging rod rated to 10g. It takes a bit more thought when you’re playing them in, but it’s doable.
A rod rated to 30g paired with at least 20lb braid is fairly sufficient in my opinion.
In any case, the law of averages says you will catch a lot more smaller fish, than bigger. If this is the opposite, then you’d be better off using heavier tackle.

You do need to set the drag otherwise you risk snapping the braid on the strike, especially at very close range, but otherwise it's fine.
Stepping up the braid breaking strain will dramatically cut casting distance.

Thanks, I have a 6-28g daiwa sea trout rod, might give it a try, I had been using a Mick Brown spinstick before.
Cheers
