Re: Feather Tails In Various Colours On Spinners
Nothing to do with feathers, Perch are notorious tail nippers.
In NZ I followed the locals and used a bit of plastic each side of the tail hook which worked. Back in the NH I have used it in the sea with similar improvements.

So apart from .....possibly adding some colour or movement they are not really doing anything ?

I have a couple of spoons & spinners with bucktail on the treble to increase the water resistance and slow the fall rate for shallow water.

One thing both do is help the hook to rust quicker and probably catch more anglers.Mike J wrote: ↑Sun Sep 26 2021 09:22 -Nothing to do with feathers, Perch are notorious tail nippers.

Look no further than mackerel feathers, they are available everywhere, everyone uses them and catches a few fish but if your a commercial who needs numbers its always a piece of coloured tube.

That does help increase the odds of the fish reacting to grab the lure. I always add curly tails and grubs to spinner baits and to some spinners. Colour? I use something that stands out, so flo red, yellow and white tend to be what I'll use. Does this increase catch rates? Yes, with pike - as it increases hook ups. I always think it adds a bit more movement and 'annoys' the fish following. Every single spinner bait I own has a teaser on it. Perch? As others have stated, just adding a bit of red the spinner body works wonders - give me an Ondex or a small mepps with a red body = perch magnets all day long.Orange , Red etc

Re: Feather Tails In Various Colours On Spinners
What I was doing a few years ago was buying lures that had my kind of pattern , firetiger , then cutting off the hair tails
It didn't make much difference to catching
But that was only one pattern

Re: Feather Tails In Various Colours On Spinners
I've had more on a yellow super shad rap with yellow squid muppet than a roach super shad rap with red squid muppet. Horses for courses I suppose, on a clearer water a gold rudd super shad rap with orange might outfish everything. Doesn't look great in hand but in water adds another twist to an already good lure

I also use them on jighead with spinnerbait arm - effective, and more durable and replaceable than spinnerbait skirts.
