Drop Shot starter kit advice please

Post by Mercman »

I have never used this method before for Perch but fancy having a go. I have no gear, and been looking to buy a full kit or rod, reel, braid and end tackle separately.

Can anyone please give me some recommendations please. Don't want to spend a fortune under £100 all in would be good.

Many thanks

I went to the tackle shop on the A1 near Sandy, they had a variety of rods, reals braids etc and a big choice in lures, I got all I needed to start off for well less than £100 but I did cheat a little by using an old real, its a shimano match so does the job just nice. The rod which is rather nice and very tippy was about £40 showing you don't need to spend a lot on a goodun!
The young fella who served me is well into it so his advice was welcome.
If you live near me you could always pop past and borrow my kit and fish around the marina just to see if you like the method???

Cheers Alan

Edit, I thought you were nearby, I see your Essex right?

yeah theres definitely a bit of that to it. Same as vertical on the ressies. Catches fish but gets incredibly mind numbing after a while. Mind you, each to their own etc :laughs:

Well I popped into Angling direct and bought a rod and reel for £50 on their recommendation. Bought some lures as well, loaded up some braid and off later this evening to give it a go. Taking the float rod with some red maggots and Lob worms too. Determined to catch a few big perch one way or another.

Well had a good go yesterday, caught loads of very small perch on float fished lob worms, but nothing on the drop shot rod. Maybe my technique was not right, not too sure but will persevere for a while.

As an aside....when in Angling Direct I bought Rod, Reel, 2 packs of drop shop lures, a pint of pink maggots and a tub of lob worms.

As he was putting the stuff through the till, I was adding up in my head and when he told me the price I thought it was a bit high, but did not know the cost of the bait. When I got home and studied the bill the lob worms were £9.99 ffs. Seems a bit steep to me, digging some up next time!

How many worms were in that tub for f***s sake?.......I like worms and couldn't bring my self to put a hook in one so the only way I could justify it to myself was to buy a tub of ten,use one and let the other 9 go,happy days
