Budget Reels , Shimano FX , Abu Cardinal 50 series

Post by Taffypiker »

just twenty quid

Not world beaters but tidy

Abu in the 50 and 51 and shimano in the 1000 and 2000 are a bit small for me but once you get to the 52 or 2500 they are decent enough reels for perch , chub and small pike

For a relative novice like me they are just right

Just because you're a bit of a novice doesn't mean you can't get yourself decent gear. Buy decent first time and you won't need to buy again

You won't need to but you will :laughs:

eeeh, diasgree with bob, get cheap stuff until you've had a few dozen fish in your net and then you'll know exactly what you want in a more expensive and permanent upgrade later on

Good advice - but Bob's right too!
More wear and tear wears cheap reels out quicker when luring - as they're in constant use - especially with bigger, more resistant lures like spinnerbaits, etc.
But less of a problem with lures under 3".

I think they are great reels , I have been hitting bass and pollack this summer and they have adequate gearing

I bought a Shimano combo to get going with, it has the FX4000 reel and a 14-40 grm casting weight rod, seems ok as a starting point.

i rate budegt Shimano's highly!
i have 4000 size Catana ( red body model) ive had it for years! and its still going, its thrown lures many mnay times, had alot of fish on it too up to 21+, drag system still fine, despite some absolute tear ups with big lively pike!
one of the main reasons i went for it is it came with an Alu spool( i only use these with braid) and plastic, not bad for under £50
