Re: Small surface poppers
10" of 20 lb seven strand wire, with suitably small clips.
I don't go lighter, as the relative stiffness of 20 lb wire is an advantage over, say, 15 lb - especially with surface poppers.
I did experiment with a small buoyant bead at the top of the trace, when using small surface lures (to stop the trace dragging the nose of the lure down at rest). I would sum that up as a sucessful, but probably not critical refinement.

Surface lures for perch?
Chub definitely like them, but I wouldn't target perch on any surface lure with any realistic expectation of success.

A friend and I have had quite a bit of joy chasing perch on small poppers and walk the dog surface lures but it's something that only seems to work for us fishing along walls or other structure like reed beds.
We've had the odd perch off the top from open water, but they're usually accidental captures on pike sized topwaters.

Warmer temps next to structure they were very interested last season thought put bit more effort in this summer existing way to fish for sure maybe not the most efficient but fun
