Treble hook bonnets/protectors
Anyone got a source for hook bonnets that will fit sizes up to 5/0? Ideally looking for a range of sizes to cover 1/0 - 5/0.
Preferably ones that stay on the hooks with a gripping fit. I have some of the old QED type and a bunch of F*x ones, but struggling to find big sizes. I use pipe lagging but it takes up too much space.

I use the cheapies of ebay, biggest size does 2/0 but any bigger youβll want pipe insulation sections

The XL Owner (blue) would do a 5/0 as it comfortable takes the ST 36 in a 3/0 and they have a big gape.
The XXL (green) will take a 8/0 - 10/0 and size wise pipe lagging would save you space !!

Re: Treble hook bonnets/protectors
I've used the old Harris bonnets for years, just about able to squeeze them over a 3/0. As my stock has gradually started to reduce, I started to use the Savage Gear bonnets, which in the largest XXL size comfortably take a 3/0 or even a 4/0 with certain brands of trebles and the XL is perfect on the more common size of a 2/0. I don't really have so many lures that have 4/0 or bigger and those that do, tend not to be lures I need to put bonnets on. The SG are very robust and once you get the knack of it, very easy to put on and off; they click into place on the treble, which means they stay put. Nothing worse than hook bonnets that come off and leave you with a barb embedded in your waistcoat pocket.
If you shop around, there's often people selling on eBay with deals for buying in bulk. I bought a load in the three biggest sizes, paid around a fiver for ten. Which is not exactly much money in the grand scheme of things. The alternative is to buy the cheap crap that from I have seen others use, which doesn't last long or do the job very well.

Re: Treble hook bonnets/protectors
Thanks for all the replies lads. I've sorted through the various types I have and the 2 on left (an Owner and a Fox) will fit the Eagle Claw 974 pattern I use in 4/0. Does anyone have any of blue Owner ones? Any chance of getting a measurement from the centre of the shaft bore across the gape please? Internal measurement please. Hoping they'll fit the EC 974 in 5/0. Fingers crossed.

Blue is really snug and doesn't clip in well enough imo.
Never realised how good those yellow fox ones were until now, bottom one in the pic is an original fox one.

Thanks Tony - very much appreciated. I've ordered some of the blue ones but held back from buying 100s before I can try a fit test on the hooks I use. Your video makes me think I might of acted wisely! Thanks man.
The Yellow Owner ones I have fit mu EC 974 4/0s better than the Fox ones - it's a bloody minefield.

Tony McTaggart wrote: βFri Aug 04 2023 15:31 -Thanks for the offer Tony - I'll try one of the blue ones I have ordered - should be here by Monday. Based on your calliper measurement (much appreciated) I think the blue ones should be good. Hopefully I'll end up getting a bunch of blue for 5/0s and a bunch of yellow for 4/0s. I know what you are saying about the clutching power between types. The few yellow Owner ones I have grip a 4/0 better than the same sized yellow Fox ones, but the smaller purple Fox ones work almost too well on a 1/0 and 2/0 - it can be tricky to get them off again. I wish the Harris QED had been available in bigger sizes. Still the best bonnets I've had just based on the plastic used.andrew_nagel wrote: βFri Aug 04 2023 14:37 -I don't buddy but I can put one next to a 4/0 eagle claw if you want ?Tony McTaggart wrote: βFri Aug 04 2023 12:54 -Do you know the model and size of hook on the Bulldawg?andrew_nagel wrote: βFri Aug 04 2023 12:23 -Blue is tight on those bulldawg hooks and don't clip in easily, I'd go xxl green buddy. Thanks Tony - very much appreciated. Makes shipping easy and cheaper, and 99% of any hooks that do make the journey get binned anyway due to size and gauge. I like a EC 974 which is 2x gauge as they cut no bother and are plenty strong enough.andrew_nagel wrote: βFri Aug 04 2023 14:37 -A big bugger, probably a Mustard 3551 7/0Tony McTaggart wrote: βFri Aug 04 2023 12:54 -Do you know the model and size of hook on the Bulldawg?andrew_nagel wrote: βFri Aug 04 2023 12:23 -Blue is tight on those bulldawg hooks and don't clip in easily, I'd go xxl green buddy. Thanks Tony - very much appreciated. At first thought maybe the added screw eye was for the attachment of a flasher blade but those Hookers have seen a lot of work modified and ran 3 trebles at some point.
Being a fairly deep bodied bait it's better off running two 'proper' hooks !!
Didn't someone start doing Hookers again ?

The Hooker Bait Co. has been through 4 or 5 owners, and the chap that has it now does them in small batches and sells on FB. Blue Water Baits were doing them for a couple of years before the current owner. They started doing fancier paint jobs and a thick epoxy finish and put prices up by half as much again. The new guy is doing even nicer paint jobs but he's banged prices up by more than doubling them! A new Hooker Junior is $90 these days and a 10" is $120. Crazy prices. I'm not fussed about fancier paint jobs, in fact I really like the original simple patterns. I've got all the original Hookers I'm ever likely to need with the standard paint jobs.
