Fixed spool reel for lure fishing

Post by GG89 »

All
Hence the title . What size fixed spool reel size for lure fishing ? Is a 10000 size reel too big ? I’ve got a FreeSpirit lure rod ( what a beautiful rod too) and I need a reel to suit. Should the reek be a baitrunner?

Cheers

So many variables,
By the sounds of it 10000 sizes sounds a bit big, but depends what you're casting/fishing for/ line diameter etc.

If using .10mm braid for dropshotting on the local canal, then a reel that size would be too big. If throwing soft plastics for tarpon using 50 or 65lb braid, then it wouldn't be out of place.

You can have a baitrunner, but I wouldn't if it was just for lure fishing.

A bait runner would serve no useful purpose for lure fishing. Not least of all because you will be retrieving almost constantly and therefore the free spool facility would be 'off'.

On the other hand, it is a more versatile reel type, useful for other types of fishing too - so why not?

You will not need the capacity of a 10000 sized reel, nor (more practically) it's weight for reel that would be in your hands all the time.

Fox Prism X 4500 is pretty good for the money, have it on an 8ft for surface and plastics with 15kg power pro, spare spool has 4lb maxima as I use it for feeder/float when after livebait, can’t get more versatile than that. Happy it can both pretty well. Not had need to yet but I wouldn’t hesitate to put it on a light float rod if the situation called for it

Any front drag Shimano 4000 should be fine. If you want a really nice one I’d pick a Vanford, and the 5000XG is 4000 size but has a deeper spool.

I’d also recommend the Daiwa ninja. Great reel and a very cheap if you shop around. The one I have holds plenty of 40lb j braid.

This was my train of thought. The small baitrunners are certainly holding their price plus there aren’t many for sale on used tackle sites .

Yep, that's as big as I'd go on a fixed spool - a 4000 will work well with up to 50lb braid. The weight of a 10000 size would be an ordeal to use for any length of time.

Hi, Thanks for that. Just compared to a Shimano Exage 4000 rear drag with a Fighting Drag Spool.
Thats 50mm diameter. Line area width 19mm.

I use a shimano FX4000 and it’s great IMO. granted I don’t do a lot of lire fishing but I find it tough, good value and smooth
