Tenerife Tuna Fishing Trip

Post by Antony » Sun Apr 07 2019 19:35

We could only get out for 4 hours fishing instead of the intended 8 hours because o the wind. Not a single bite despite there being 8 rods out grrrrrr But seeing the Pilot Whales and lots of dolphins made up for it πŸ‘πŸ˜Š

We took a charter in Gran Canaria a few years ago.

We had one clip out but we did see a few enormous blue fins pop up from under the dolphins. A very interesting day though to see fishing that is so different from the stuff we do.

Really glad you enjoyed your trip.
I always say a day shared with sea mammals is never a disappointment.

If you really want to catch tunas I can call you when they are ON but you go when I do.
Can sort a pick-up and self-cater and you can fish them on anything from 130 down to 20

depending on how long you wish to remain attached

Wolf fish or Peche Lobo as the Iberians call them, around the mainland they are red in colour closer to shore, darker when it gets deeper, the Canaries being oceanic islands means deep water almost everywhere.
Each fish holds a territory on a patch of rock and attacks anything that enters, when reef fishing for bream its normal to fish them out before the bream will start to bite, in comps they normally start with red leads as an extra attractant.
The spines (espinhas) are not really poisonous, just a bit of nuisance with the swelling if you get pierced deep.
They are good for Bouillabaisse the French fish based soup that to be authentic should only be made with fish with spines.

The one you caught is a nice size and worthy of grilling, if only to see what it tasted like.

I am really sorry for you Antony because you have almost certainly damged your eyes permanently.
We dont take eye care nowhere near seriously enough, its a simple choice of pay now for good eye protection or pay later as Im having to.
Nothing less than Category 3 for normal use and driving and Cat 4 for severe reflection (illegal for driving).

My eyes have sun been sun damaged and now they dont even meet the EU driving minimal standards, lenses Β£70 frames Β£100 (cheapest available) Ive probably got another 25years so you do the calculation, and thats just for distance vision.
Biggest shock is how quick my eyesight went, two seasons ago I could long trot and read TV txt, at the end of last summer its been impossible, all gone in less than 18months, all becsuse of sun damage.
And I'd worn RayBans for nearly thirty years following a warning.

Hi Ian and welcome aboard. :handshake:

I have fished the Canaries but know little of the recreational tuna fishery there.

The offer I gave to Antony concerns big game fishing in Portugal.
Not the rip-off tourist charters offered to package tourists but the quality fishing the locals have enjoyed for decades eg; Bluefin, Big Eye, YF, Sharks and Marlin.
