Bananas

Post by John Milford » Thu May 21 2020 14:19

. . . . . are supposed to be bad luck on a fishing boat.

Anyone hold with this superstition?

Geoff Parkinson put a banana skin on his hooks at Deggy one time. We both blanked so I guess bananas are a jinx.

I think the superstition comes from the 1700s , Bananas give off high levels of ethylene which makes other fruits near it ripen quickly and go off, all fruits back then were lumped together on ships from exotic places so a lot of was rotten when it got to its destiny.

We are more closely related to bananas than most people think.

About 60% of human genes have a recognizable counterpart in the banana genome. The DNA match between bananas and humans is 50%. :pipe:

I think we've all met a few people with a far higher match than that! :laughs: (Don't let them on your boat! ).

I've definitely heard it from skippers out of Hartlepool before. Apparently saying the word 'rabbits' on a boat brings bad luck too?

I've also heard that it is bad luck to paint a boat green or to wear green on a boat too.

Google 'bad luck in boats' and you'll never leave dry land. :dizzy: :laughs:

e.g. "It is unlucky to set off at the start of the fishing season without having first shed some blood in a fight or in an accident."

It was something I picked up on in the 'States, some take it very seriously. I sometimes share a boat with Alex Prouse, he invariably has at least one banana and always kicks my ass.

Here's a cracker: In order to encourage fish to be caught, Scottish fishermen would begin their fishing session by throwing one of the crew members overboard and then hauling him back on.
