10ft Portabote 6hp Engine?

Post by keeponchucking » Fri Mar 26 2021 21:09

Evening all,

I am picking up a 10ft used portabote tomorrow. I will be looking to buy a brand new engine more than likely a suzuki due to the weight.
I will be fishing alone from this boat. Would a 6hp be too much for a 10ft? Main use for this would rivers and small lakes.

I would be looking at a 6hp over a 3.5hp as i have use of a couple of lake boats on different lakes boats so would like to be able to use the 6hp engine for them rather also.

The 10ft is rated for a 25kg (6hp) engine so should'nt be a problem ?
6hp will be of more use on a lough boat or similar and also has reverse gear, which the 3.5's don't.

Thanks Bill. Ye it is rated for a 55lb but says 2hp also so I was thinking it might be a bit over gunned. Might see can I borrow a friend's 6hp and try it on it before buying one new myself.

honda do a 5 hp with a reverse gear .....but not sure on the the weight
i have the 5hp on my 14ft ali boat and it dont half go too
a 6hp might be a tad to much for a 10ft ....me thinks as you have less room to balance it out .......
but like you said if you have bigger boats to go at no probs

Should be fine,I've got a 4hp Suzuki on my 12ft portabote, they are the same weight as the 6hp. At the time there was an offer on the 4hp that made them a fair bit cheaper,I've used it with 2 on board on small lakes, river and coast with no problems

Most 4's and 6's are the same unit with different carbs so it should'nt cause any issue. A lad I know who had one tried it with his 9.9, it went well  :laughs:

I used to run my old 12ft portabote with a 5hp Honda engine no worries at all.
