Do not use Lip/Boga Grips

Post by Ben »

Certain tackle companies and shops are currently marketing the Boga Grip (or Lip Grip) as the next 'must have' piece of kit.

All members of the Pikers Pit strongly encourage novices to the sport not to use these tools as they are potentially very dangerous to the Pike.

When starting out Pike fishing you should go with someone who is experienced with handling and unhooking Pike, lip grips are not required!

Always remember, Pike conservation is number one!

totally agree no place in pike fishing for this usa/european torture gripper, i recently watched a pike eater/e european use one of these on my local water and he couldnt understand why i didnt use one, he caught a 1lb pike then hung it of these while he i phoned it, i would have liked to ram it in his mouth and drag him round the grass ha ha, mind you in my younger days i saw many decent sized fish being swiped at with a gaff, anywhere will do or had a 4 pointed gag pushed down its throat, so although modern pike can get misstreated which nobody whos a genuine piker would approve of they get a lot better deal than fish in the past

They sell these at Yorkshire game , although if your using it for trout and about to stove it's head In with a stick then I suppose it's not the end of the world , but if it's thought they cause fish pain then they shouldnt be use at all

No place in pike fishing for sure.

But banning tools is never the awnser education is. Still gona need one fishing for certain seafish (not in my costal waters tho).

Improper use of landing nets or improper nets can cause alot of
damage aswell. But we dont scream bann nets.

Here (holland) no one uses them any more. besides the usual suspects and then we dont worry about damaged pikes being put back sadly.

Boa gribs and mouth spreaders have no place in pikers kitts.

These horrible things are not new I saw one in use in England some years ago. Cannot be more precise as I have already had a bol****ing for naming waters.. I did challenge the angler but was just called a nosey.... ( can't use the name on here but the word starts with 'c' and ends with 'unt'). These things belong in history like the gaff and keepnets. Had a look on Amazon and they are being sold there, one for an eye watering £800. Looked at the comments and people love them. Especially the Yanks, one said that it ripped a fishes mouth so he let it go, I thought nice of him.
Just old and knackered.

My friend has a decent American boga grip with accurate scales built in , he brings them in his bag when we go out to sea , they are bloody good for unhooking smallish bass caught on lures , plus great for quickly weighing a flatty , bream etc ... so not all bad in my eyes

Probably fine for the fish they were designed to be used for. They wernt made with pike in mind. Pike have a very thin membrane on their lower jaw they tare the s**t out of it. They thrash like mad and then snap their jaws.

Pretty sure they were made by americans for the likes of large mouth bass

Nigel Savage showed me a picture of a pike he caught on rutland last week. Someone previously must have used a boga grip. It had terrible damage to its jaws!

I bought some based on US youtube videos for Large mouth bass. Used it once and realised it was totally unnecessary as Black Bass are already one of the easiest fish to grab hold of. Popular with some in Korea but others claimed it can in some cases break the jaw if not correctly used, that was enough for me to decide to never use again. However they are heavily used in sea fishing over there and for larger fish did seem ideal (I never caught anything large enough to justify giving them a try though).

It’s amazing the amount of people that have absolutely no knowledge of handling pike before going fishing for them.

I have recently caught some AW pike which have had their top jaws severely damaged by peoples use of boga grips. IMO they should not be used because of this. No excuses.

Photo taken from (USA) utube vid. Believed to be damage caused by Boga grip. Although partially healed, the pike was caught on topwater bait.

I caught one last winter that was mangled by one of those. I'm certain that the culprit wasn't fishing there lawfully.

It's just so pathetic. If these people are so scared of toothy fish and flying trebles, why don't they just fish for carp FFS
