Hi all,
new here, in fact new to it all, haven't even tried fishing for pike as yet. I have decided to give up sea fishing as i fancy a new challenge. i have been trout fishing a few times and thats where my questions start :) i use a 10ft jarvis walker spinning rod for trout, line class 8-14 cast weight 15-50gr, would this be any good to cast a bait (sprat/sardine) for dead baiting for pike? i hope that's the right term, I've just been watching some you tube videos
Thanks in advance.

Re: Want to try pike fishing for the first time
its a bit of a light set up bit its ok for a small water, a bit better for spinning by the sounds of it. its a good start as the fish wont be deeply hooked (normally) and it generally picks out the smaller ones so nice and easy to handle.. make sure you are not surrounded on all sides by snags and have a strong line 15lb mono or ideally braid. 30lb ish. is there any chance of picking up a secondhand carp rod? it will make the experience much better for you if you want to deadbait., further casts and more control when you do hook into one. a suspended float dead or livebait is an easy rig to get to grips with and to start i reccomend buying ready made snap tackles or traces whatever you wish to call them. a big landing net (triangle specimen net is cheapest option) and some long forceps to get the hooks out. and on the subject of hooks use semi barbed at least at the start s it makes unhooking 110% easier-hopefully you will find that out by hooking into a few

Your best option is join the PAC in your region and I'm sure some of the guys would happily arrange a day where you could meet up with one or two of them and you can have a chat and have a look at the setups they use.
In the end, it’s not going to matter how many breaths you took, but how many moments took your breath away.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MK8IDxwMaw Copied from above, at 7.10 the pike takes the bait and moves off arching its back, teritorial display to the fish in the background, seen that vid before but never noticed it .
