Hi all,
I’ve been using soft rubber shads with the jig head hooks lately with reasonable success. However, I have lost a few fish with the hook pulling out. I thought about using a stinger but I fish the canal and to be honest it can be quite snaggy in areas. Is this a common occurrence and is there anyway to help combat it?
Many thanks.

Re: Single hooks
If your canal is in civilian areas you need strong 60-100lb line because you can expect to snag anything from prams to shopping trolleys (both hold pike btw) right down to bags of dead kittens.
With any lure over 3" I would employ a stinger and use a longer rod to enable me to lift the bait in a jumping jack action, also a lightweight head as it allows more time to flutter on the decent.
Best stingers ever designed are Twintex, expensive but designed to do the job to perfection, but you can make your own from trebles by heating (cherry red) one prong and bending it to the desired angle, or whipping a smaller hook onto the shank if you want singles.
Some very BIg fish inhabit canals so go prepared.

Re: Single hooks
Why would you want to heat a treble and bend it Mike.... out of interest?
Easy to make stingers of varying lengths using wire and your pref treble on the end. Loop on one end to go over the eye of the jig head and hook on the other end either directly or on a split ring if you pref. Can change hooks then. I just nick the standard treble into the top of the shad. Putting it on the side or underneath means it catches on the snags more.
Use heavy enough braid and wire to enable you to straighten the hooks out.
As an alternative to traditional jig heads there are ones available with springs that wind into the shad like a corkscrew. does away with the big singe hook. Then add the single or two hook stinger as you pref to match bait size.
Paul garner wrote some good articles on fishing jigs and mounting shads in pike and predator magazine a while back. Worth digging out. based on reservoir fishing but good info you can relate to all shad fishing in it.

Re: Single hooks
Hi Kev,
Sorry for the late reply I have only just noticed your question.
I dont know if you've seen them but the Twintex is a specialist double hook designed specifically as a stinger for anglers using soft lures. Pic to follow.
It is a unique design that has a tiny reversed hook (around size 16) attached on the double shank, the tiny hook can be nicked into the Shad or whatever and doesn't damage the lure when it detaches, thus extending the life of the lure.
My suggestion was that by modifying (heating, cutting and bending) one hook point on a normal treble the questioner could produce his own twintex style stinger hooks.

I can't find anything about twintex hooks mike?
Savage gear do hooks that are similar thing singles and doubles. Search savage stinger hooks. Combine these with a corkscrew jig head you could even use them release rig style I guess. Have a look on YouTube for videos.

Sorry about the late reply (replies to posts seems to be not working)
Buy your hooks from here, they are highly reliable and you get 10 Twintex hooks for the same as two Spros.

Search the site, lots of good/hard to find material on there.
FYI Obtained mine when I was in Germany, never seen them anywhere else.
