Don’t even think about fluorocarbon where pike are concerned Sparks,do a search on traces, trace material and you’ll be able to see all the previous discussions that should answer your question

As Nige has stated ditch the fluorocarbon.
Buy yourself a quality trace wire .
Read the previous threads you’ll find the information you require.

Sparky
Hi and welcome aboard.
Wire Wire Wire Wire nothing but wire.
Dont worry about the fish seeing it, they would have it on a coathanger if they wanted it.

Buy a bulk spool and learn to make your own leaders and traces, loads of how tos on here.
Over a lifetime it will save you a fortune, then you can spend the savings on

more tackle. :laughs:

Have fun, its a great sport

Wire would be my first choice too, as the odd specimen pike can turn up on waters you won't expect them on.
And the feeling of losing a fish due to tackle failure sure does suck.

I have been lure fishing for pike for nearly a year so wasn't that long ago I was asking myself the same question. I only use ready made titanium traces. On the cheaper (lighter) ones the clips straighten out, cross lock i think they are called. Cheap or light weight clips always straighten in snags not the hooks meaning lost lures. On the more expensive traces nothing ever gives out, hook straightens and lure retained. Get the best clips you can. If you use them that is?!?!

For lures look no further than Chico's.
Simply the best available and at a price you cannot beat if you made your own.

I bought six and am still on my first!

Thank you all for the kind words, it means a lot.

Remember my leaders are 100lb Ti and suited to jerkbaits, soft plastics and heavy spinnerbaits, not so good with the lighter stuff.

I'm a fan of the AFW wires I like the Bleeding Leader in 60lb and 44lb I've not had any issues with it sure the plastic coating can get shredded but that doesn't make a difference to the strength of the wire. Honestly I would avoid fluorocarbons they have no place in pike fishing in my honest opinion.

I've seen people getting bitten off with fluorocarbon in the states and it completely fries my head as to why they don’t just use a wire leader, I see it creeping into the UK scene more and more with self-described celebrity anglers using fluorocarbon leaders for lure fishing singing its praises because some company they are paid by tells them too or they are trying to be different. I can remember two conversations at PAC conventions with a couple of years between them where a certain well known angler said no he wouldn’t use anything other than wire leader cue a few gigs later with anglers world holidays and he's singing its praises and fluorocarbons were the best thing since sliced bread, bite offs? Bah who cares I'm getting a free holiday stop asking questions.
