First ever pike
Had my first go for pike around 5 weeks ago and blanked on a canal.
But I had a fishing session with my brother yesterday, at a little course lake local to him (he can't drive) so we couldn't meet anywhere else. Covid...grumble grumble....
Neither of us had caught a pike before. My brother had tried several times in the past but to no avail.
Anyway, we started early, pretty chilly. 3C or so, guides were freezing up while we chatted over a coffee. Overcast and pretty murky water, managed my first pike, it took a jerk bait about 1m from the bank. Little jack. My guess was around 1lb. My brother then had 3 better jacks, between 3 and a half and 4 and a half lb at a guess. I didn't bring my scales..... He lost several that kept throwing the hooks, we realised that he wasn't striking hard enough to set the hooks. After that he was able to land the 3 fish. He was rather chuffed to get his first!
I then had my second ever pike on a jointed lure, a slightly bigger jack. Similar to my brother's biggest. Will fish my local drains next for some more wild fish
Cheers

Congrats! They're great looking fish, even if they're not the biggest. Hopefully the first of many!

Well done. It was a pleasure to read your account. When I catch on lures I don't care what size they are.

Well done fella and hope you have many years of enjoying chasing old Esox. The great thing about our beloved pike is that no matter which form of angling you enjoy be it Lure ,fly ,float or ledger the Pike is very accommodating. Welcome to the PIT
In the end, it’s not going to matter how many breaths you took, but how many moments took your breath away.

Cheers. Was fun despite their size. I'll be looking for larger specimens on my next trip onto wilder waters!

Re: First ever pike
Definitely! You will notice I had my "optimistic" net with me :P
I am usually a sea angler and I bought this XL predator net to allow me to land fish on a rather dangerous mark. Usually it's a hobbling game over slippery boulders, it's had large Thornback rays, decent bass and double figure conger etc, so it's more than big enough for a large pike. Did look a bit large for the pike we were catching though, haha.

Indeed! I had my first fly caught trout last month as well, so two new species in the last 5 weeks or so. Good fun all round really!

Cool, I do love my sea fishing, but decided that alongside my Bristol channel antics I'd throw in some pike fishing over winter and trout over summer :)

Ah, I'm Clevedon, so tend to work on my local marks most of the time. I do fish further afield on occasion. Also have a mate from Severn Beach who I do most of my fishing with!

Well done, those first pike captures will now be imprinted in your mind and you will never forget them. I still remember mine some 40 years ago like it was yesterday. Look forward to bigger fish!

Nice one. I remember my first pike like it was yesterday (40 odd years later). Also remember your first double,
in my case at 24lb (I sh*t myself) ;) Happy days.
