Starter pike rod , light deadbaiting , spinning
I have an Abu Tormentor 10 foot , 10 to 40g , moderate fast
And a Shimano Vengeance 9 foot , 10 to 40 g , fast action
Shimano is very stiff
Would these be OK for October for sprats under a small float , 20 yards out and also for light plastic lure fishing ?
They were both less than 40 quid but I think they are pretty good value

They’d be ok jack bashing using the small baits/lures you’re talking about but if you hook anything more substantial then you might struggle.

How about a Drennan Sincast in either 8ft ( test curve 1.75lb ) or 9ft ( test curve 2.25lb ) ?. Either of those would cope with what you're doing.

Go in a tackle shop and have a look at an Avon rod and compare it to any spinning rod they have, you will notice the Avon has a softer action that is ideal for casting light lures and soft baits.
During my teanage years I used a basic 10ft Avon rod for light lures and spinning sprats, caught me hundreds of fish plus my first 20.
Also used it for holiday bassing and much later for largemouth bass in Iberia.

New to pike fishing, I’ve been spinning with lures, using a Abu combo baitcaster caught a few nothing massive largest about 20”, smallest about 9”.
My Son has done a lot better, he’s spinning rod reel of his choice..
