New to pike scene, looking for advice and tips.

Post by Benjip91 »

Hi,
I'm new to the pike scene and just getting started.
I've fished coarse and rivers for carp and barbel but new to this.

I headed out to a dam near-ish to me that is well reviewed to have some good pike over 25lbs (as well as carp, cats and the usual silvers).
I tried it floating lamprey and smelt but only had a couple of knocks and one follow up as I was retrieving, but nothing taking the bait.
I'm planning on giving spinning a go and wonder if anyone has any tips on lures etc as spinning is new to me, nevermind spinning for pike!

Thankyou in advance

Welcome,
If you don't mind me asking, have you unhooked one before? if not, do you have anyone you can go with?

Do you have the "essentials" such as long nose pliers/forceps and some bolt cutters for cutting hooks if necessary, an unhooking mat so you don't set them down on concrete/stones etc? Are you using a wire trace?

For lure fishing,
I recommend braid for mainline.
What lure rods do you have and what weight rating are they?

I've never unhooked one before so shall see what I can do.

I've got 12" forceps, wire cutters, unhooking mat, cut resistant glove, 42" net and wire traces. The place doesn't allow braid sadly else I would do, so I'll be using 15lb mono with a wire trace.
The rod is a 'devil spin 9ft', 20-60g rating.

Sounds like you have made a decent effort in prep there so well done!

There are some good unhooking videos/tutorials on YouTube by riverpiker that are worth watching, such as this one

If you have already watched plenty then no worries.

As your stuck to mono I'd be using cheap lures :p

Thanks,

I'll have a good look at a few and hopefully I'll be able to put it into practice...

Fair play, I've got myself a couple of lures £5 and under to get me started.

Would it be worth deadbaiting a second rod while spinning do you think?

The devil spin is OK

For a step up I would suggest the shimano vengeance in the 9 foot , 10 to 35 or shimano fx 9 foot , 10 to 30

Both fine for spinning and light deadbaiting

Hi Benji and welcome to the forum.

Fishing a combination of spinning and deadbaiting can work very well, but the downside is that it limits mobility - which is the essence of spinning.

A float ledgered deadbait fished close in is a good option if spinning too. A nearby, highly visible float, is easier to monitor as you'll need to ensure early indication of a take on the bait rod.

If you get follows on your lures, without the pike hitting them, it is worth staying in the area to see if they'll pick up your bait.

Thankyou,

I'm going to give the devil spin a go for a bit first as I've just forked out £200 for all the basic essentials that I didn't have from the coarse side of things; strong/big enough net handle and net hoping for that double...
But I will definitely keep them in mind for my next rod, thanks.

I shall have to give that a go and keep that in mind with fingers crossed. I've got a 30g dinsmore float which is more than visible from a way off so shall be trying that alongside spinning on Saturday(fingers crossed for the winds to have eased off by then!)

I'd join your Local Pike Anglers Club group, as there is a wealth of information and there will be others there who will help you out and build your confidence.

Best advice you could take on board is hit em early.
Never wait!
Everything just becomes so much easier and less stressful if you’ve only got the front part of its mouth to deal with. Your fish are dealt with quickly and go back nicely and you’ll feel much happier with your pike fishing.
Sure your going to come across an awkward one and the odd deeper one but on the whole if you hit em straight away your piking experience will definitely be a more enjoyable one.

Go visit a fishmonger and buy smelt or sprat.
Make a few drachko rigs.
Cast and be slow.
Pike and you will befriend.
