im betting alot of those 28 are from the lower reaches of it also. be interesting to know what makes it an ideal place for big zander ? plenty of bait fish, not so much fishing pressure. and the murky water suit zander ?

That’s crazy I recall the record being about 18lb not all that long ago, although it’s probably longer than I’m thinking.

21 years ...Jesus ! didn’t think it was that long.
The record has very slowly crept up then as not a huge jump from 18 - 21 ( if 21 still is the record that is)

The record over here has potential to be much bigger. It is strange that there has been nothing officially bigger than 21 (recorded at least, and theres also Mick's 22lb Grafham fish as well)

Ive seen Dutch river fish much bigger, in the flesh. Sweden occasionally does bigger out of the lakes, and there have been a couple of absolutely huge fish out of the Seine recently. The reports on the Ebro are kind of sketchy as a lot of them get eaten but there have been plenty of mid-20 fish reported.

The Severn and the trent have the conditions to throw up huge fish- muscle is heavier than fat so those fish that deal with the big flows could in theory pack weight on. If they are big, muscular fish caught in the middle of a feeding rampage then they could in theory go bigger than 21 quite easily. But then maybe the water's we have aren't "big" enough, save for the AW ressies, but then the depths and fishing pressure put added stress to those fish. Its interesting.

If memory serves me correctly, the record crept up pretty slightly from 18.13 to 19.05 in Mar 98 to a very well known Fenland Zander specialist David Lavender; and there it stayed until 2007 when it was bumped up quite a bit by James Benfield with his 21.5 Zed taken during pretty freak summer flooding conditions.

Who know James but it is damn interesting dude  .

Lets not forget the potential that one or two Fenland waters also have towards producing an absolute whacker mate, there's also the odd dormant stillwater which has produced the odd freak in the past and which could do so again. One ore two in the heart of Fenland but there's also one or two a teeny bit further west.

I suspect that if the river close season is lifted then the record could go but it might not do the fish any favours

better that than no one being out there keeping eyes on.

Saw a picture of a colossal zander from last April...in someones kitchen. Severn fish, so I'm told but then I take everything with a pinch of salt these days.

I've actually been shown pics a claimed 25 from a certain trout water. Trout angler caught it whilst fly fishing for trout. He said he weighed it in a sling and put it back. I have to say, it looked bloody enormous in the pic he showed me. I know... but it would not surprise me at all to see one that size getting caught from a trout resi.
