Its strange Nigel at certain times its all wee c*ck fish you catch they seem to hang around in packs .There's a few lochs if you catch it right during the smolt run you can catch a load of them . They are cracking looking fish.

A few from the weekend. It was hard going for me with only one take and the fish got off. Well it actually trashed my trace and snapped off the end treble .God knows what it was but it was big and very powerful.
George was on form though.

That's a nice spot you had.
I had to raise the engine going through that gap but it was better than running the gauntlet through the other one with all the speedboats and jet skis that were there at the time.

Re: ferox
Superb specimen Fergie, the spots on it look like they have been photo shopped, they are that vivid!! it went from Baltic to balmy in the space of a week down here at Rutland, some cracking browns coming out again, fish to 16lb came out last year, (they are all triploids nowadays) not bad from being stocked at around 1-1/2lb.
Do you get many oppuntunities with surface action throughout the year? back in 1989 to 1991 we had some amazing surface sport at Rutland with big fish, Browns & rainbows that were herding up roach around 5-7 inches up to the surface, over deep (not as deep as your lochs) but over 50/60 feet of water.
It was similar to the blue water salt water fishing, with in this case gulls circling overhead showing you where the action was going to be next, it was a who's was going to get the roach, the gull or the trout, my best rainbow was 8lb 2oz, she had three 6/7 inch roach in side her!

Re: ferox
Very rarely Nigel. I've seen charr being chased to the surface and once seen a massive shoal of powan on the surface which was amazing it looked like thousands of mullet splashing around. The ferox seem to be pretty hard to catch when they are in among a huge shoal of bait fish.
Cheers Nords.
What's the big trout situation over your way.
Ive seen some amazing old pics of huge German trout.

There are some very nice fish to be found in the alpine lakes and also in the big stews of the Sauerland though. (Both are excellent pike waters too with fish well over 20kg)
If you are interested here are some of the biggest browns and ferox reported: https://www.fisch-hitparade.de/hitliste/bachforelle https://www.fisch-hitparade.de/hitliste/seeforelle
As you can see from the pictures, unfortunately most fish are taken for consumption though. That probably is why a big trout is often referred to as the fish of 1000 casts. Besides that many waters are heavily regulated, the big stews didn't allow motors up till a few years ago for example.
We also have some trout stock in the baltic sea, but situation is about as difficult as on the lakes. People catch big ones from time to time when trolling for salmon though. The island of Rügen and the danish border area would be the places to go in that case. https://www.fisch-hitparade.de/hitliste/meerforelle

Re: ferox
If you ever make it to Germany to fish I think Möhnesee and Biggesee would be your best options.
I fully agree with you about releasing those fish. It is a shame they end up dead. However, because it is common in Germany, there are new fish stocked every year, so at least the genetics wont be lost as they probably come from the same stock as the generations before.
