too early for cats?

Post by suffolk si »

The Mrs is away this weekend and I am pondering a couple of nights catfishing,(either that or a night out on the lash with the rugby boys). Never attempted this untill about June time before, just wondering if people think it is a waste of time this early in the year?

It is not spam Andrew. i presume members of the forum want to know about good places to fish? Our carp syndicate is full with a big waiting list, hopefully the same will apply to the cat fishing. just giving forum members the heads up. Incidentally we are also getting people asking for rudd tickets. At present there are only two of these and they are taken. we are not looking for more rudd members despite fish of 3-08 having been caught.

There's been some big cats out in my neck of the woods in the last week .
Tomorrow I'm traveling a little further out as I've been informed that the cats are starting to feed on a lake I fished last summer.
As they say you have to be in it to win it.
Fingers crossed

The Mrs is away this weekend and I am pondering a couple of nights catfishing,(either that or a night out on the lash with the rugby boys). Never attempted this untill about June time before, just wondering if people think it is a waste of time this early in the year?
I've had them in February from a couple of waters, by design. Also had the odd one when carp fishing in winter, but generally I wouldn't start on most places until late mid to late March. This year I had my first bash two weeks' ago, had one fish of 37. Then this weekend, I had five, with two 40's in amongst those. So, I'd get out there - now! On most waters, I say most, as of course some by their very nature will 'wake up' a bit later, but early Spring is THE time to be fishing for cats. April being IMO the best month of the year - they're at top weights and in top condition too. Also, the banks are quieter, which for me is the biggest bonus. I hate crowds me. Squid BTW is a good early season bait, if lives are off the menu...

To answer my own question, no its not too early!
I had a great 24 hour session,yesterday,6 runs in the night, all in the bloody rain(hence me looking like death in the pic) and as a bonus me and my fishing partner had this pair, both around 20lb(one slightly under, one slightly over) during daylight, which were still good sport and nice to get some pics as there is no sacking on the venue for night captures. Nothing huge landed by national standards, i did however lose something that had immense power, knowing there are at least 2 fish in the 50lb-60lb class in there i have a sickening feeling it was probably one of them that i just couldnt stop running to a snag on 20lb line .
Whilst i am struggling with the tench so far, i am loving cats,i know they arent everybody's cup of tea, but anybody who hasn't fished for them is missing some of the best battles with fish in this country and when you have a few in a session its great sport in my opinion....also as Mark said, now is a great time to catch them......roll on a fifty!

Well done Si
I've been out three times after the cats in the last month ,out again Wednesday .still haven't had one,
Fished a new water to me last week, fish in there to nearly the ton,no night fishing allowed but had a good chat with the owner so who knows what the future holds ( fingers crossed)
Did see one cat 25lb caught on a zig to a carp angler, beautiful condition
Maybe their not ready for 30mm plus baits yet😃
Hope you catch that big one your after mate.
Tight lines
