Used to be a common practice where I live.
Tried it, and regular roach catch more.

I did it once many years ago when younger. We where struggling to catch livebaits and had located some big perch. Out of frustration we bought some goldfish. It worked i had a double figure pike and my mate took a 4lb perch on one!

Would never dream of it now as its way to risky due to transfer of disease such as KHV etc. Dont do it...................

This talk of disease seems strange when many anglers will habitually move other fish and fluid about

I dont think they can Kev but simply transferring water is enough so all fish movements can do it!

Can anyone actually confirm a spread of any disease through livebaits....

apart from khv I believe all the other fish diseases are endemic throughout the whole of the UK, they require a certain amount of triggers to set them off---temperature, oxygen levels, fish stress levels etc
some ones bucket of roach has so far not transferred any disease (I have asked the EA to name me one water where they know a pikers lives have transferred disease)

Wasn't so long back you get a licence to move livebaits----all you had to do was state were from and where to

I reckon it's a safe bet that almost every piece of water has had pet fish introductions in one way or another :laughs:

Once, when I was lad. Got some out of the local pond, all about half a pound if memory serves. Seemed like a good idea at the time but they made very poor lives. Ended up tipping in the lake and giving some match anglers a nice surprise for a few years :laughs: There's also the other reasons not to use that people have aired. Oh and they cost too much in the size I'd want :exit:

They are excellent dead baits I have a friend who breeds Koi Carp and there's always a load of damaged ones from his stock pond so I end up with 5” to 7” Koi Carp in various colours that the Pike love, I shrink wrap them and freeze them I have used Goldfish in the past and they did work for me I think because they stood out in the water the Pike were quick to hit them.

Here in Northern Ireland it is against the law to be caught using livebaits so I can’t advise how well they work here in NI as livebait that is naughty hahaha

Don't goldfish hybridise with crucians, if they are present?

Best not to meddle with eco systems in my opinion, although fishery managers seem to do it without even blinking

Not sure john. I know they can turn natural again instead of big daft orange looking things. Wither thats through breeding after introduction or not i cant quite remember.

I reckon a natural colored goldfish would be a cracking thing to catch.

They can carry KHV but don't get the disease like carp do.
