A very fine catch!

I see a chap in the AT has caught an eel over 10lbs or a double to you and I, that puts him second on the all time list I think!
That is such a great fish. possibly over 100 years old and what i like is that it may well take that fish another 15 years before it beats the record so I would suggest to Mr Lumb, dont rush!
Well done to the angler and I just hope it wasn't on a boilie :laughs:

Cheers Alan

I caught an eel of less than a pound tonight. That's a bootlace to you and I.

If the big one was caught by design that's top angling.

:giggle:

The significance of a "dub" has been lost somewhat with some species, barbel from the Great Ouse (if there's any left) average over 10lb and from the trent multiple catches of double figure fish are often made to some anglers, I know an angler who had 10 10s in a session.
With bream their massive sizes in some carp fisheries mean that most carp anglers have had fish over double figures, I know a chap who has had 2 over 17 on boilies!
A tench over 10lbs is still rather noteworthy but you have to catch a tench over 12.5lb to be in the top 50  I remember the significance of aving a 12 barbel fishing so with tench I think a 12 is the new 10 :laughs:
Even chub have done the dub although the British record is just shy of that!
I can remember the tench record at 8 summut and the barbel at 12, is nothing sacred anymore :laughs:
Anyways back to my boilie robbing 5lb snottys! :hissy:

Cheers Alan

What a fish!

I recently saw an eel in my new venue that can’t have been far off that sort of size, could only see about 2 foot of it but couldn’t see either end, or even where the fin finished on the top of its body. Nearly fell in when I realised what it was!

I've caught a few fish heavier than what the record was when I started fishing!

Anyway, well done to Mr Arbery. Great catch indeed.

Me too, Dave a few years ago I fished a water for tench that had done one or two dubs, I had not fished for tench for years and my pb was 6 and a bit.
The 1st one I had was 7 and I was simply astonished by the size of it, the next was bigger, the next was 8 and the next was bigger, I ended up with a few over 9 on later sessions!
How things have changed!

Cheers Alan

The eel record was unofficially broken by a carp angler on a clone valley water. I think it was the Cons/Fisheries but a no publicity venue. IIRC, it was around the 13lb mark. My water opens on the magic day, I'm going to chuck a bunch of lobs by that old sunken tree and , having heard about a carper being flat rodded, a livie on the surface for the cat(s). We have to remove the cats when caught, they get re-located by some fishery owner from Essex.

Seen a dead one easily bigger than that going by the girth. About same length maybe a tad bigger. Tried to get it out with a big spinner got the head out and fell off and sank in to the weeds

Talking with an old eel netter he told me that they used to get quite a few 10lb plus eels from a small drain in Holbeach, along with quite a lot of tench which is what he was really after as he got twice as much for them.
Maybe they not as rare as we think ---and are thus feeding on something we havnt got on the hook

When we were kids a mate caught an eel of 5lb 14oz from a venue which contained no eels, on a mid-water fished livey.
However this beauty is a great intentional catch, well done that man.

Jack Russells? :clown:

Could be feeding on snails or small invertebrates.

I think if they were there anglers bait of some sorts would tempt them.

Cracking eel, big eels do get hooked more than people think but to land one without the correct tackle is difficult.

Does that include chironomids, thats buzzers, most fish, including big fish feed on them.

Could well include chironomids and everything else that lives in the silt and on weed.

A carp angler I know (all rounder really) told me about watching eels taking advantage of spawning roach. He said the small eels were mopping up the eggs while bigger ones were shooting straight up and grabbing the roach themselves. I'd like to have seen that.

First double figure eel caught by design ( and reported),

Has to be at the top of all uk captures this century, I can't imagine how impressive that would have looked in the flesh 😯

I have fished a bit for big eels and get the impression you really do have to "match the hatch".

A close friend if mine took a "opportunist" 7lb+, from crystal clear water, while it was moping up 1inch fry in bright sunshine.
We had previously had a 4, couple of 5's and a 6 from the same water on deadbaits, while worms and other baits completely ignored.
