Re: Bass
As far as they like is the answer.
I believe the record is 30+ miles, on a Norfolk river.
The largest of a species the more extreme conditions it can tolerate eg; colder/hotter water, changes of food or lack of food, which explains why the really big fish are often found alone or in pairs many miles away from the smaller and younger of the same species.
You've caught on the bottom because salt water is heavier than fresh, but did you catch any Perch?
Poach or steam with some fresh ginger, and try some cold when the taste is even better

'still canโt catch a mullet though' dontchknow your only supposed to look at them!
The most annoying fish that swims until you hook one, but you have got to admit they do look nice

They can indeed be truly absolutely maddening on occasion, Houdini could have learned from them.
Have had some past success on short hair rigs and anti-blowout rigs.
Don't fish for them if you have blood pressure issues.
Can go like stink though!

Re: Bass
Stripped Bass have been caught round our coasts in the last few years.
The hope is that they establish a breeding population as they are a super sportfish that can grow to 50lbs plus.

Re: Bass
There was that "tidler" (for a stripped bass) caught in Kent some time back. That's all this ol' boy is aware of.
Must have taken a massive wrong turn somewhere.

A little like the Blue Marlin being netted in the Channel up as far as the Tyne or the Meagre down the SW, or.....
What I would like to see is a few Moray Eels around our shores

Alsop (is it "White Water") out of West Wales has been on-the-mark for several years now. Although it is still illegal to deliberately target them (at the mo'), he's seen the odd Blue-Fin T to 500+lbs when sharking.
You can stuff your Moray's, evil things.

Morays are lovely creatures, specifically designed by nature to discourage anglers from kissing their catch.
A 500lb BF on rod and line is more than a handful for most inexperienced anglers especially if they are over 40years old and a grander is almost a physical impossibility the only one Ive witnessed caused the 46yr old angler to have a minor heart attack after it was released.
The largest Bluefin caught in European waters weighed 1000kg, and that was after it had been gilled and gutted!

I had a brief "early" taste of saltwater "heaven" back in 81/82. Between messing about with the Falkland's, long story. Anyhow Al' was on Ascension twenty years before the Big Game Boats came over from West Africa. That alone must have been a heck of a trip, crossing what, a thousand miles(?) of ocean to get there. You want a Grander, get lots of funds and get over there. The fragile state I'm in these days it would quite certainly kill me, mission impossible.
Back to the original question. How far up......just about as far as they like or can, certainly as far as the saltwater "wedge" will go, heavier than fresh water is the salt and Bass 15 miles up is more common than most think, tidal limits can extend further up, much further then might appear and spring tides will push them up even further. Common in docks, alongside mullet, no tides there in some, only opening and closing of lock gates.
