In engineering terms to crimp refers to a mechanical action of compressing a tube or ferrule so it acts as a fastner on stands of a material.

The flattened copper tube over the wires of your leader connection produces a fastener and has therefore been crimped.

Read again, it was a typo stands the r was missing but the s wasn't :laughs:

You also said "Fastner". Am I supposed to presume every word requires checking?

John is as usual correct.

Well I’m pretty happy with how my 12lb traces have performed knotted, but I’m assuming the heavier 65lb stuff will be a bigger nightmare to work with and get neat !
What size crimps are people using with this size wire ?
65lb = 0.50mm
Singles or doubles ???

Crimp is a property of wool - how wavy/curly the fibres are. This may be the root of the word. When applied to anything else 'crimp' implies waviness; as in crimping a pie crust or hair - or a metal sleeve. If it isn't wavy it isn't crimped.

Teeswater fleeces have a high crimp value.
