Zander
Zander
Supposedly another 20lb plus zed has come off the Trent.
Unfortunately for the captor this is a well known fish and also a well travelled and often caught one and a group of keen zander lads have details of its growth since my mate caught it at 13lb
Biggest weight gain in a year was 1lb 12oz
Surprisingly it has put on almost 3lb since its last capture a few months ago when it was caught at 17lb 8oz
Easily recognised due to tail damage
Looks like the NW weigh sling foot loop has been in use

Re: Zander
Unfortunate?, not a word I'd use
I'd say well done to the guy that landed it rather than try and diminish its capture, a fish that size would just look immense and worthy of congratulations

This will be the third 20lb zed claimed in a year....the other two were recognised fish as well. Both had had a surprising sudden jump in weight
Why do they do it? All credibility is straight out the window .
The latest zeds biggest weight increase over the last 7 years was 1lb 10oz...and its slowed down since. It certainly hasnt put almost 3lb on in the last few months.
Apparently a claim for Trent record being made and will be in AT soon.

Re: Zander
It'll all become apparent Kev when the pics come out, if its a 20 then a big well done, if the weight has been overegged then it'll be pretty obvious so either way time will tell

Re: Zander
Ive seen a picture of the recent capture. It looks massive. Both on the mat and when being held.
I dont know the guy who had it though, so no idea if hes a big lad or a small lad. The only thing I would say is that its short for its weight. But then I know people who aren't particularly tall and weigh a lot, so you know. Goes both ways (weighs?!)
I havent seen a pic of it for a little while though- I saw it about 18months/2 years ago and weighed at 18-odd. Is there a chance it was mis-weighed at 17? Either way, I wouldnt say no to one that weight
As for the 3rd 20 out this year....its the 3rd I've heard of in a month

Re: Zander
All these fat fingers and conjectures make a mockery of claimed weights.
Why dont people just lay their fish down alongside something that can be measured later?

I don't know the first thing about zander, having never even seen one other than in a photo. However, having seen the photo of this I'd say it's no more than 19-15.

Re: Zander
It is rather comical as some would think that a fish has never been out before and will never come out again!
On the river near me a couple of years ago a young fella posted a photo of a nice looking new years day 30, never said what the ounces were or that it was 30lb exactly, held out at arms length but was clearly a good one.
Few weeks later one of the other bailiffs witnessed a nicely conditioned 25lb (forget the ounces) fish that in the pictures I thought "I know you!" and indeed it was the same fish. Now I think we can all agree that fish gain weight at that time of year rather than lose over 4lb. Next October I had it at 20lb exactly!
Cheers, Alan

Re: Zander
On another river this fish tripped up once or twice a season for five years, caught by folk who weigh them properly. Its weights fluctuating from 16+ to 19+.
Zander carry less spawn % to body weight when compared to pike. This adds up as they guard their nest/spawn, so less eggs are required for species survival. The weight fluctuation on this fish I guess is more to do with the amount of grub it got down its neck.

They fight as well as pike ... sometimes (like pike) they come in easy....but as a rule Trent zeds are feisty feckers

I would have doubted the weight gain were it not for a friend with impeccable credentials who witnessed and photoed her. Ive witnessed small groups of big zander feeding on occasion, they are like dogs and would eat themselves to death with available grub if they could Never see it every year but when there is a big run of elvers they can gorge on them on and off all day, difficult to catch them at this time and a week or two later.Emma Hamilton wrote: ↑Thu Jan 06 2022 11:47 -Hi ,Rob I wonder at what time of year was the fish at its heaviest? On another river this fish tripped up once or twice a season for five years, caught by folk who weigh them properly. Re: Zander
Happy new year Rob. That old girl is still plugging away. She has been out 3 times to my knowledge this season, fortunately not to my rods. My mate Jihaddi Dave had her early October at 14-14 but at her latest capture she came out at 15-12. Sadly her vent now protrudes, which according to Dave, should only happen during spawning. I’d assumed big river zander are like trout water pike, grow fast, die young, stay pretty, but she seems to keep going. Fortunately the river seems to keep replacing old warriors.
I think big Zeds can binge for a short period then lie up for weeks afterwards. Catching a big fish AFTER she has been feeding like this seems the hard part.
As for the Trent fish, it’s certainly a good fish, but it’s no way a 20, and the provenance of its previous captures bear this out. The truth comes out eventually. The Trent is an amazing river but because it is so good there are many fishing it who I would not trust to weigh a lead weight without getting it wrong

Apparently this fish is 80cm long....damn good fish he says (seeing as he caught it some time back ) but he says needs to be longer to make 20

Happy new year back at ya mate. Amazing she's still about, exception to the rule fish? I caught her twice and don't want to see her again!
You get them in river pike fishing too, the occasional big fish that survives seemingly year in year out whatever might be thrown at her and the older they get the more they trip up and get caught. There's a big pike on the other river at the mo that keeps coming out either side of 30 over the past 4 years, one fella always fishing the same swim has caught her three times and thinks he's a pike fishing god!
Give Dave my regards.
