Pike Pool (107) Alan Behenna

Post by Jason Skilton »

Morning Pitsters,

Its the day before the traditional start of the pike season, so if you haven't twisted the traces, stuffed the freezers with smelt or sorted the lures....here is a piece that will get in the mood for the season.

Enjoy!

Very good piece of writing - almost felt there with Alan ........ Many thanks.

Especially as I can only fish vicariously due to Covid isolation since March  ....... Tony

Great piece -That was some brace Alan! Top bombing!

I've only fished over my proverbials in chesties a couple of times, funnily enough with topwaters.

'Entertaining', to say the least, to be playing pike at virtually eye level (even though my fish were nowhere near the stamp of yours).

For anyone that might be that interested:

Most unusually........most!

There is a rare opportunity right at the moment to get hold of two of the best patterns (through personal experience) on Flea-Bay right now.

Only source is the states' though.

Originally in three sizes, the 5" the 7.5" and the 10". I'd be picking them in that reverse order.

Remember, it's not the holy grail, it has quality control issues.........but "cared for" and tweaked as Al' used them, they did exactly what I had intended.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from ... l&_sacat=0

The pictures he's using are mostly all the 10" versions (two underbody trebs), the smaller versions have only one underbody treb'

Best of:

Best of Luck Dan, I would imagine it might be a challenge to get it to run "correctly", part of the fun.

The originals in both brand versions (with internal harness) had "some" turn-over" or "run-wrongs" in pre-production. Guide Dog' mentioned it, Bucher must have bin' the same.

Mine will be just the body and will need rigging up by the angler, but the body shape looks fairly easy to copy.

Hi Alan.
The 10" twintail arrived yesterday so I knocked up a rough mould last night.
It'll need a day or two for the high temperature paint to fully cure and then I'll pour one or two and test them at the weekend.
Assuming I'm happy with them I'll send you a couple to play with and see what you think.

My first impression of the lure was that a chunkier body may make rigging them up easier, that should be easy enough to do if required.

Hi Dan,

I'm intrigued, looking at your mold, and of course the compound being used will matter. Compare the running action with the action of the original and how it's rigged needs looking at. Fascinating stuff.

If the newly molded runs well enough, the acid' test will be ol' esox herself of course.

I suppose any decent pattern might work. If it's of any use "The Twins" came to the "Natural Perch" and "Rainbow Trout" patterns in the original Buchers'. The NP looked like a green jelly with gold flakes suspended throughout.

Thank you for your kind offer, if your efforts should pay-off, much appreciated (and interested in your efforts here).

This lure is such that it's twin tail action is the b-all and end-all, and how you fish it, actual body pattern might be secondary, to a degree.

Hope the Customs etc didn't get you.

I had a few people ask how the lure turned out so here you are.
The originals the lower lure for comparison.
This one was made for my mate who prefers a dark red for his red head lures.
There's a little blemish in the join line but that was me being clumsy, not a fault in the mould.

I like it, possibilities there. Can think of at least three ways to rig that, right off the bat.

Here's his "also now very long defunct" seven inch version with single belly hanger. Not everybody like to throw the bigger stuff.

Looks good Daniel! I suspect it may be hard to get it to run right with the body shape. It will probably require some weight under its belly to act as a keel.

My mate rigged a test model up with a weightless corkscrew in the nose with two small stingers from it into the back of the lure.
He then added a weighted corkscrew to the belly to keel it.
Worked a treat, he's had a good number of fish on it over the last week while testing it.

I'm looking at changing the body shape to something chunkier to allow other rigging options.

Leave it with me, I'll see what I can do.
I think I can make a smaller one by using the big version as a guide.
