Post by Emma Hamilton »

Tell you what Pool-Siders, if there is a more interesting predatory article than this published anywhere in 2012 we'll all run around the pool with our skinny dippers down !

The Pike Pool is delighted to be given the opportunity to publish an article from Andrew Nagel.

Mission accomplished.............. Enough said............... Read on.

Enjoy !

Interesting read that Andrew and nicely told. The '16's' subsequent growth rate surprised me.

Reading your comments about the roach potential makes the mouth water too. Do you have the same level of avian predation over there as we have in the UK?

Denmark has Europe's largest population of 'inland' cormorants. However Denmark has a political system that is somewhat down-to-earth, where groups of the public organise themselves well and get listened to. 'Danmarks Sportsfiskerforbund' is a national 'umbrella' organisation that represents all angling clubs. The clubs are not cheap to join, but part of the funds are grouped at a national level. The organisation has several full time employees that fight our corner. There are problems with hydro electricity generation that slows the flow of rivers. Illegal netting is also a huge problem. The national body has successfully negotiated the closure of hydro generation during fish migrations, and are now in mid campaign to stop netting. They are very effective. The winters of 09-10 and 10-11 froze the cormorants out and this year it is very noticeable that many perished.
On the roach front... I remember an article a few years back about a chap who had 56 roach for 165lb in 4 hours. It was backed up with photos and the fish were beauts. They are classed as 'pest' fish and often netted out of lakes to help in the process of water quality treatment. Image

Thanks for the positive response chaps. It was nice to look back through my pocket note books that I never seem to have time to digitise into spreadsheets. Image

good article Andrew. Its great when you really get to know a water and its resident pike population. But as with all angling there is always a surprise round the corner. The roach fishing sounds fantastic.

Out of interest what did the last pike weigh?

Bill... maybe I should tell you that it was the 'slow sinker' rig from your book that inspired me to adapt the lead-linked rig so that it could be slowly retrieved without the bait dragging the bottom. Image Image
