Mackerel
Don`t know if others have found that the mackerel are few and far between this year?? Off North Wales anglers are `sometimes` just getting one mackerel a day whilst bait fishing. No Bass either but plenty of baby flatfish.
Does anyone know other areas having the same problem??

Chris Donovan

It's the same at Morecambe Bay, very few mackerel coming through. Just the odd one now and again.
The place is overrun with garfish though, not seen so many for years.

Re: Mackerel
Chris,
I agree, off Barmouth last Summer you couldn`t get to the mackerel lower down as the small joey`s would take the feathers in the first 6 feet.
On one day there were two bait balls being hammered by Gannets, Seagulls, and Guillemot's from the top and God knows from what underneath. A great site.
We had some tope last week on flatties but the fishing is slow despite the surface water temperature of 16 degrees C.
More to come later in the year I hope.

We've been catching from a boat, spinning with a small 10 gramme Toby , but I've heard they are also catching them from the pier at Blackpool.

I have just returned from Southern climes where the much loved sardine has been so severely depleted there is a ban on all landings so the mackerel have become the substitute.
Saw some near 3lb mackerel in the markets in Galicia, beautiful fish.
Gannets diving off the Wight on the return journey (could be sandeels though).

I`m up to North Wales this weekend and I am hoping the macky have arrived. If they aren`t in now then I don`t know what is happening.

Re: Mackerel
Bearing collapsed on boat trailor despite regular greasing so no macky this weekend.
The AA were brilliant and I had the boat back and on the drive by 10.0 this morning.
Had no problem getting the new bearings but not the seals with a 4 day lee time.

Fished this week and noticed a few things out at sea.
No mackerel
No Gannets
No Seagulls
No Guillemots
Only tiny bass
What`s going on? This from an area which always produces all of the above.
Trawlers???

Went off Lydstep Haven on Sunday (next to Tenby) and the mackerel were few and far between. Had a dozen but worked all day for that.
The `in the know` locals are telling me that the mackerel fishing is very poor in relation to previous years.
Maybe the hot summer with low winds has made them stay out at sea with no need to enter shallower water around the Welsh coast???

Went to Weymouth with the family a couple of weeks ago and me and the lad tried off chesil beach. Macks were few and far between just the odd fish. Think we only had four and one Gar. Been before and caught 5 at a time but if they’re not there you can’t catch em!

Kev.
The taking of any Bass is banned in UK waters.
Stocks at dangerously low levels with recruitment suffering accordingly.
