Lift off!!

Post by Oldskoolfool »

I've rediscovered lift method float fishing on my local carp syndicate - basically got bored sat behind two carp rods.

Using a 13ft pellet wag with a center pin and 10lb line catching loads of Carp, tench and bream a rod length out - which brings me to a question what's the best float to use?

Currently using long insert wagglers or drifter beaters shotted with a single inline olivette of appropriate size - should say the pit is deep 12ft over the shelf

You can still buy the drift beater, I was looking at them in Benwick sports this weekend. I think they do mail order too.

There cracking floats pin them right down but still got a big round tip to see, they come up like a rocket
a quarry near me was excellent fishing lift method for tench and skimmer bream

Anything you like as long as its not loaded so it pops up easily and it's got a clearly visible tip, especially if you're fishing into dusk.

Great I'll continue using my old drifter beaters - having way more fun that if ledgering as you get loads of signs before a take!

May also make a couple of homemade floats just for this

Really underestimated method. Never seen anyone use it round my way.

Used to have these floats, drennan I think I can't remember the name of them. Basically a waggler which tapered from halfway up the float to the tip in steps. I want to say stepper float but I can't find anything with that name but aye pretty much any waggle will do in a pinch.

Stepped waggler!

Might even have been middy and not drennan. Didn't have that bulbous tip though. Nice clean bite indication.

Just found out about a tiny pond on my club ticket that’s stuffed with tench and crucians, and would like to give the lift method ago, so will keep an eye on this thread for ideas. I’ve got a few of the drennan glow tip antennas in my box which look perfect for the lift method. I’ve used them as a normal Waggler and they are ever so sensitive. Just a shame you can’t seem to find them anymore.

Agree on the glow tips seem to have joined thr stillwater blue in the great floatbox in the sky.

I like the glow tip but largest is only 2.75g. May need to make some home made specials!!

I'm finding that for drennan floats balsa or plastic the stated load is slightly light for lift float - need to increase by 0.5g - so for a 2.5g float used 3g ollivette/ball weight.

I still have a couple of stillwater blues, the best crucian float going. A number 8 telltale shot plumbed to depth 3" above the hook, nearly every bite was a lift.
