fly fishing for rudd

Hi would like to know if anyone has tried this and what flies work best for rudd I was thinking off giving it a go.

I have done a bit as a trial and I have had them on caddisfly, buzzers, gold heads and also on czech nymphs work.

The issue is that the w/t rod I use (6/7) is abit on the heavy side and a 4/5 would be better with either a floating or slow sinking line.

I did scale the leader material down to 4lb, but on a lighter setup an thinner leader material could be used.

I use a Shakespeare sigma 4 wt rod, floating line, and 3lb leader. I also use a bite indicator on my line.

I fly fish for dace and roach quite often and find traditional wet flys like cochy bondhu and black pennel in size 14 and 16 very effective. I use 4lb flourocarbon but will go down to 2lb at times.
I use a 11ft 4 weight leeda rod.

Where i fished for them they liked any small dry fly. Anything, absolutely gobbled them up. Grey duns, wickhams..anything. Ide are even easier, had some toppers on dries!

This post has got me thinking....
I fish a lake that is stuffed with Rudd which I usually target when the weather cools down a bit.
Take the cool of the evening and a walk around with a fly rod and it might just be the way to get amongst them, who knows, but without trying I will never know. Plus it must be more enoyable than the heli-maggot feeder or missile.
Will post my results etc.

Where I grew up my house was on the banks of a water. Never had any rudd but some nice roach which were a joy to catch on small dries and buzzers. Dawn was the best time. Very light leaders. It's quite difficult to catch the better fish if there are plenty of smaller ones about. Good fun trying.
