Vintage Gear

Post by Chris Hammond »

Anyone know anything about these old reels ect? I was given them by a non fishing mate who was clearing a house out.

I'm guessing the big one attached to the short rod is for heavy game fishing? There's several early hefty looking rods there which I'm assuming are all old sea rods.

I wouldnt mind having a go with one on the beach over Christmas.

Is the black one on the floor an Abu Ambassadeur 9000 or 10000?

Is the one on the box a Penn  :exit:

The reel on the rod has lugs to attach a fighting harness, so probably a big game reel, could be used for skate and heavy wrecking!

It us Dave. A 9000c according to the marks. It looks a bit grungy but there's no corrosion of any kind. It should clean up well. I'm guessing an early beach casting version if the little ones we use for lure kit nowadays.

No the one on the box is a Grice and Young reel. The one on the rod butt with the blue line is the Penn

The big one looks like a Penn Senator 114 (6/0 size)

If so, it will have a sailfish embossed on the side plate (and the name!).

The white one looks like a Mitchell 'Captain' 624.

They're both boat reels.

Grice & Young sea multipliers were called 'Tatler' reels. Big, heavy, cast metal things! Can't see one of those there?

You can tell by the 'Football' (American football) handle knob that it's an old one.

Great reels that last forever Bob. They're the only reel I've ever completely dismantled, deep cleaned, lubed and rebuilt.

I bought one that ran like a nail when I got it, but after I'd finished with it, it was purring like a Swiss watch.

Certainly are John. My 113 is a beast for wrecking, over-gunned really and I also have an original US made 525 for beach fishing, pretty much indestructible.

You're quite right John, my mistake. I might have the missing GY reel in the van somewhere. There were some other bits and bobs I havent unloaded yet.

Chris,
The rod with the Senator on, what makers marks are above the fore-grip?
A Senator of that size would normally have been used on a decent rod and your rod looks like it has had its gimbal replaced.

The Penn Senator holds more World Records than any other reel, yours is the low gear 6/0 50lb class version, the colour of the hand grip shows its of some age as most post 60 reels came with black grips. Low gear spools are made of bronze, the posts are brass as are all the screws and the reel clamp all chromed to a very high standard.
They are great reels and practically bombproof.

The decal has been worn away Mike. All I can see remaining is 'an" as though at the end. Peter Drennan wouldnt have made a boat fishing rod I'd imagine so no idea really.

The whippings look a little home done but it's a heckuva lump of glass! Solid I would guess?
