Yes, I've caught pike from this river too Peter but generally further down. I have also had bream on lures although most were accidental and snagged rather than by design although a couple were. Probably the most ridiculous lure catch I've had from the same river was a bullhead on a tiny piece of isome on the lrf gear on a size 16 or 18 hook on a split shot rig.

Ridiculous! I once caught a bullhead with a ship's magnet. I've also caught one with a grappling hook, possibly equivalent to a size 100/0 treble!

I think some people call them millers thumbs but up here I've always known them as a bullhead.

I vaguely remember an Angling Times article about whip fishing and gudgeon, As i remember it was Ian Heaps vs Kenny Collins (or perhaps other well known match anglers of the day) one had a top of the line pole and other had nothing more that a skinny branch from a tree! Match ended about even I think.
I’ve not caught one for years, used to be prolific in my local cut (T&M) but have vanished now. Predation maybe? Zeds have been in the cut for years now and cormorants, pike, perch etc etc plus a noticeable lack of anglers feed going in too
If you always fish where others fish, you'll always catch what others catch.

It used to be the easiest fish for us to catch for pike bait as chaps. Could always be gaurenteed some before heading off for a pike. Been years since Ive seen one. Not sure what numbers in my local river are like now. Would be a welcome site for me for sure.

My Bream PB took a 3in Kopyto lure on a Fen river and was booked fair and square in the top lip.

A Bullhead is a Millers thumb looking somewhat like a thumb hence the name. But its distinctly different to a Gudgeon.
Cracking little fish is the Gudgeon and I've caught pike on them too.

We used to catch heaps of gudgeon when kids over the local ponds, then one day we went down to the Thames at Richmond on the train and caught the biggest gudgeon we had ever seen, they were monsters :laughs:

The quest for a double (>10 grams) is real! There are some serious gudgeon enthusiasts out there. I was lucky enough to be considered for GUGGS, but my membership has since lapsed.

Interesting to see people say Gudgeon are rare, they're prolific here in The North West. I've also caught them as far as Norfolk.

Have to say I find that hard to believe, though when it comes to the Daddy Ruffe i haven't caught one in donkey's years. As kids we used to catch loads of them along with boot lace eels which destroyed your hook lengths.

Ruffe are also common round here, especially in canals. I've been fishing NW canals & rivers since I was 6, so I talk from experience, in fact I was getting plagued by Gudgeon the other day while trying to catch some Roach livebaits. Ruffe and Gudgeon are both common in my local waterways.

Plenty of people can back me up on this 🙂

I had six of these this morning, in a mix bag of Roach, Dace and small Chub. I'm thinking of guiding. 'Monts Fly Gobio Adventure'. I should really do some proper fishing, but it's so much fun with a light fly rod.
