I was thinking the same, I've got a little club water that allegedly has a good head of 2-5lb tincas so that's probably where I'll start.

A bit early around here, bigger deeper waters. I'll be starting a bit of bream fishing from next week or so, the tench will begin to show up gradually.

If you have shallow waters the water temp has risen enough to start fishing for them :-) The deeper waters like the gravel pits and reservoir will ahve to wait.

Its beacuse the local pike waters within a reasonable distance are crap!!!!

So I've not had a chance to fish much .....But I have a tench water close by and they go to a reasonable size 7lb+ ....plus there is a chance of a daft mud pig too to pull my string

Same here, Suffolk is not a great county for piking. Everywhere I go is at least 40mins drive, so lockdown's travel restrictions ended my season in December.

I'm looking forward to some tench fishing this year too, but not until the middle of next month at the earliest!

my local water is on fire for tench
one guy had 18 tench to 7lb last week
they have been catching since the end of feb by all accounts
i used to fish this water when i was in my teens when there were fish over 10lbs
went to have a look today , there was over 20 cars on the car park , news soon gets out here....
i have been told its the best tench water in the northwest for sheer number and a good average size..... the biggest i have heard is 9lb plus this year.... and its only a small water maybe 4 acres in size

I'd have to climb over the fence it's behind and get stabbed to death by the thorns in the process!!

Use an empty plastic bottle or milk container, add water, throw it underneath and recover with a bit of bale twine.
Nitrogen is all they need and yours comes free.

It was minus 3 over night, but I think that that the fish are more active than we think at time.

So they might be, but I like to start at dawn for tench and I don't fancy sitting there in -3. Once overnight temps get to the upper single figures I'll be up an' at 'em

I've caught them whilst carp fishing in -7 (the lake froze the day after), so I don't doubt that they will feed in cold water, but I'd much rather be sat there in t-shirt to be honest

So re the tench what is you go to mix to get the tench in your swim and feeding.

My mix is for a day session is

• 1 pint of hemp
  1/2 pint of caster (crushed)
  1/2 pint of dead red maggot
  1/2 tin of ASDA value sweetcorn
  Handful 6mm coarse pellets
  Plus a tbsp of Nesquik Strawberry Powder

All mixed in a bucket with the juices from the homecooked hemp, sweetcorn and about a pint of lake water.

  Plus a tbsp of Nesquik Strawberry Powder

All mixed in a bucket with the juices from the homecooked hemp, sweetcorn and about a pint of lake water.

Sensas 3000 lake(I like the dark ground bait) mixed with dynamite sweet nut liquid (watered well down as in 10 parts water to 1 nut liquid). To that, 2 mm pellets, caster, maybe a bit of pigeon conditioner, few grains of sweetcorn and some crushed up boilie, depending on the time of year. If early as in February/March then ground bait with very little 2 mm cell pellets. Sometimes I like to use a different ground bait in my feeders over the top of my bed of bait. Sonubaits and dynamite do some very good method mixes. Or I use a stick mix and make it up really smelly with sticky krill. The world is your oyster!

It's mainly a mix of pellets, 1,2,3 and 4 mm with a very light sprinkling of sixes.
Loads of dead maggots, sweetcorn, a few casters and plenty of very finely chopped worm.
I don't bother too much with flavours, the chopped worm provides a great scent trail.
Groundbait is only for plugging the feeder and it'll be whatever fishmeal groundbait is on offer at the time.
