Chub hybrid?

Post by swestpiker »

Caught this fish a few weeks back and assumed that it was a skinny chub... Looking back at the picture and just wondering if it could be some kind chub/dace hybrid due to the narrow mouth.
Caught from a small fast flowing river upper stretch.

Thanks, looking at the red fins I'm thinking the same now! I think that the angle on the 2nd pic threw me off a bit maybe.

The red colouration to the fins and eyes- and especially the concave fins - are not at all chub-like.

I agree with Andrew - a very nice, but slim-bodied roach. (Perhaps a local strain, well-adapted to life in faster currents?).

Andrews correct in my book, its a nice roach.

Roach will find all the sheltered hollows in the bottom and your bait could easily have washed into such a place.
Go back, where where is one there will be more and perhaps even larger.

Caught this from a mixed coarse/ carp fishery in July this year.

Looks as if it might have Chub in it?

I didn't weigh it but can't be much less than 8 ounces if not more.

The chub in the lake i fish are quite scarce and I'm told someone with or without permission put in the lake from their garden pond.

Definitely a hybrid what do you guys reckon.

Regards

Martin

No, Bream/Roach hybrids are so much different to this fish. There are Roach/Bream hybrids in the lake and they are caught quite regularly.

I think its a F1. Very common on a lot of commercial fisheries.
In the end, it’s not going to matter how many breaths you took, but how many moments took your breath away.

Definitely not an F1, though there are a few in there, I've had one weighing 7Lb.

Observations
The tail does not seem natural, the ragged edges trimmed before it was stocked perhaps.
Thickness of the tail root and the hump behind the head points to a carp something or other.

Might make a good bait.

I'd say a carp of some sort.
