Dead dogfish on the beach

Post by m00minpapa »

Hello all,

Yesterday I went fossil hunting on the Norfolk coast. While there, I found three dead dogfish in various states of decomposition on the same stretch of beach.

It got me wondering how they might have ended up there. Were they victims of seals perhaps, or an unscrupulous sea fisherman? What do you think?

Aliens. Aliens put them there.
Jokes aside, without any other information than given any suggestion is pure unsubstantiated guesswork.

Yes, there’s not much to go on, but being a big X-Files fan, I’d have to go with the alien hypothesis

I was on a beach once, that was littered with dead rays - perhaps a dozen of them.

I don't know what their reproductive cycle is, but maybe they were seasonal spawning casualties?

The discarded by-catch from trawlers is another plausible possibility.

I would guess the local commercial netters discarded them at sea ... but could be due to something else

Often see lots around where Hastings fishing boats beach - so assume they are discards.

I often fish off this mark, most tides you’ll find ray and dogfish discards, the dogs are sometimes gutted and the rays are minus their wings, so definitely from the trawlers those ones

The heads aren't kept as some sort of trophy are they? Holiday maker could find one on the beach thinking they have found a new species of shark?

There are some right tossers who go sea fishing

The cruelty and lack of respect for the fish , litter and bait and discarded tackle is appalling

I would bring in a sea fishing permit if I felt it could be used to fine and name and shame these tossers
