I made a change to the forum to help with performance. if all topics are showing as unread go to the main page (click the banner at the top, or click board index) and click on "Mark forums as read"
you might need to do this on multiple devices if you swap between devices to view the forum.
technical stuff:
cookies now handle what display of topics you have previously read instead of the database handling it.
