Starling Mumuration

Post by martin(rockape) » Tue Feb 23 2021 21:39

This occurs every year in my part of town and visible from my house but a much better view just a couple of minutes walk away.

Unfortunately the image quality seems to have deteriorated a bit having uploaded from my phone to Youtube.

There are 5 short videos but here is a link to the first one.

It's great when you're close enough to hear the wing beats. I like video 3, love watching them zoom in to a roost.

Used to see them in much bigger flocks when i was a kid on the edge of the village, having said that there must be several thounds flying around here. What I've video'd is just a small section.

Consequently my glasses got a coating looking up at them :laughs:

The last 2 nights the wife and i have watched the starlings just down the road from us having the murmuration right above our heads a truly amazing spectacle. There must be thousands i just can't estimate the figure.

The streets , cars etc that they fly over and where some roost are pebble dashed in their droppings and understandably its noisey at night with the birds chirping away.

Didn't bother going to ight but like a little boy i was out in the garden watching what i could and missed some spectacular arial movements.

Here is a screen shot of a photo that I've zoomed in a bit showing a small but amazing site none the less.
