House martins

Post by davelumb »

I had to stop to take some pictures yesterday evening when I saw big flock of house martins (and a swallow or two) swooping around this roadside house. being such small birds it was impossible to capture the effect of them whirling around at high speed, swooping low over the road and twittering. There were lots more than in the photos. Great to watch in the evening light.

The first one is actually bird shadows.

They are lovely. We've always had lots of swallows but the martins only appeared a couple of years ago.4 nests this year.

it might have been a good breeding year with lots of insects this summer. Saw a recently fledged sparrow in my garden this morning. Wondering if it's from the third brood.

Considering the amount of whitewash that was further down on the pilings I did wonder if this was the second or maybe even a 3rd lot. Very full nest, the one on the edge looked a bit precarious , hope he had some early flying lessons.

Had a huge hatch of winged ants in the garden the other day. There must have been a hundred plus swallows and martins feasting overhead. It was like a bait ball frenzy.

Things must have gone well for a lot of birds this summer. Sparrows still feeding young here today.
