Thanks Dave.
What ever he is he didn’t mind Benson being close,
They have had sheep overwintering in the park for a few years now, they’ve not signposted the field yet but previously have had Manx and Hebridean’s.
Rare breed conservation grazing is all the rage these days.
Conservation grazing is the only way to make any money from a rare breed, that is why the damned things are rare in the first place.
Being browsers Goats consume a greater variety than sheep, plus the meat is healthier, always in demand and sells for a premium price.
Faddy conservation projects are OTT down here with some even using European bison.

Whether they use sheep or goats, or cattle, depends on how the ecologists are trying to manipulate the ecosystem because of their different grazing/browsing habits.
I've heard of bison being used on some daft project where the grazing could have been done with native cattle, and imported horses grazing where a rare native breed horse would have done the same job. All to do with what is trendy.
Thanks Dave.

Nothing to do with ecologists. It is because of Government payment schemes that are available to any landowner. I entered at the very start when it was £600 per acre, with that I could give the grazing away for nothing. Finding someone who wanted it was my biggest problem.
Most consevation projects are simply gardening on a larger scale which like gardens soon revert to natural sucession without regular maintenance.

We have sheep at last along a club beat, I've fished now for 21 years. Ambling along in the fog, I went a**e over t*t on a newly installed fence today.
Lumby what is this breed? You can just make out the little f*****s in the fog.

Well, Father Dougal, those are far away sheep.
Mate,
So I'm ambling along, I seldom see another soul fishing. I go through a gate, close it as you do. I'm happy I'm out fishing then wallop....I'm in in heap on the deck. Done by those dinky Sheep fences. I look up and in the fog, all I can see were hordes of the buggers. The upshot, new tenant farmer who rode out on his quad bike mid-morning to enquire what I was up to. I'll try for a better shot next time.

Those fences are usually electrified!
Chances are they'll be cross breds of some indeterminate type. I can never tell the white faced crosses apart. If they have speckled faces chances are they'll be mules of some sort. Hope this helps.
That looks like a Texel or Texel cross. I thought that post-Brexit they'd be sent back to Holland.
Give me any sheep breed any day of the week, as opposed to the b*****d Welsh Cattle they had along here 15 years ago. When the sun goes down, you're tucked away possibly after club hours while fishing for Barbel. Then those coonts wake up.

All cattle are big, clumsy, inquisitive, things.
No Dave they are not. This one Friday night a mate and I fished a little late, the f*****s were charging up and down, like a bovine rave, I guess having fun, but for an hour they were charging about.

Sound like youngsters. I had a herd of stirks go stampeding off across afield one evening when I was going barbel fishing. Another time I had to walk half a mile across a field with a herd of similar idiots snorting and jostling each other at my heels. When it was time to walk back not only had it gone dark it had turned foggy too. Luckily I didn't surprise the herd and made it safely back to the car!
