Plenty of bleating today.

I was either too late or too early for the lamb races, but King of the Castle was starting!

You can skip back and watch the excitement when they see ewe nuts arrive, followed by frantic running around and jostling to get a head in the trough!! :giggle:

There were twins born, with some human intervention, this morning.

This local flock were having a mad five minutes today, and for some reason approached me instead of running away like they usually do.They were headbutting and jumping on each other, trotting about and generally acting like lambs! I bet they were glad of their thick fleeces, it was a bitter wind out there.

Sheep breed the summer, the Romney.

510AA17C-AFB3-4BAF-9A97-A89CD8B05D91.jpeg

Until a few years ago this breed was known as the Romney Marsh.
Said to be the first breed of sheep introduced in England and the basis of sheep farming in New Zealand.

You eat horns then? :laughs:
A Romney provides a carcass that is highly regarded by butchers, chefs and knowledgable cooks and why most flock owners still sell their meat privately, the fleece of a Romney has one of the longest staples of all our breeds, it is finer but also hard wearing which is why its used for high quality clothing and to weave Axminster carpets.

We also have wild ponies that roam the New Forest, just a few miles from the sheep in the photograph.

Ah but a crook is only required if your sheep are badly behaved.

Besides a horn crook is only for posing, not for working sheep, for that you use one made entirely from aluminium.

This is a good book for anyone interested in livestock breeds. Nicely illustrated too. Cheap on the used market.

Another one I have is a history of farm animal portraits. Lots of great old paintings reproduced of many breeds.

This one seems to have gone up in price on the used market since I bought my copy for £12.00!
