They usually return mid-Feb. If they start to spawn before the 4th of March it will be early for my pond.

The water level in my pond is dropping day by day at the moment as I haven't got a new liner fitted yet. Been too wet to work on it. Though how I'll get the remaining water out with all the frogs in it I dunno!

Plan B is to let them spawn, put the spawn in buckets on a temporary basis and hastily fit the liner. Whatever I do there'll be nothing for the tadpoles to eat.

Hmmm, A bit of forward planning would have helped.
All you can do mate is your best and I'm sure you will, the blackbirds etc will look after some of them for you.

The plan was to get the liner in before the winter rains came, but...

Blackbirds do like tadpoles though!

The unlined pond is now black with tadpoles. I had also seen the occasional glimpse of at least one newt. I had a 'scoop' with a landing net today and turned up two. I have to say, they are cute up close.

They may still be around as they only enter the water at this time of year to spawn. I spotted them this year because there is nothing in the pond except muddy water and tadpoles. The first glimpse I got was of a newt popping to the surface for a gulp of air then diving out of sight again. They do it quickly. When the pond was well weeded I reckon I'd never have spotted this. I dug the pond late in 201 and have seen two newts before this year. One was dead on a rock by the side of the pond (a mystery) and the other was a half seen glimpse. They've probably been around all the time.

Make sure you have lots of damp hidey holes in the garden and newts, and frogs, will make use of them when they are not breeding. I have a rotting log pile and two piles of stone/rubble.

The pond is roughly five foot deep all round .
I put a floating island in it last year to put some plants that the fish couldn’t eat ? Lol
And hopefully a place for the frogs etc to rest .
