Any of you over the border get any good photos last night?

Apparently they were visible as far south as Teesside too.

Local TV (Look North) say that it can be seen again tonight in Northern England, and of course, Scotland.

Aurora not playing tonight, but might be back tomorrow night, my astronomy sources tell me.

They also say it's very unpredictable.

I'd love to see that! I've often thought that if I ever have a lottery win I'll treat myself to a trip to Norway to have a go at seeing them.

Me too Chris, but from what I'm reading, if the sun does what's being forecast tonight and skies are clear, the aurora could be visible in southern England.

If we're lucky,we may get to see it from home. You might need to get out in the countryside away from light pollution though.

Sod's law will probably dictate that it comes this far south but will be obscured by clouds.

Why is it suddenly visible at this latitude Jon? I've never heard of the NL being seen here before. Or is it relatively common?

I will get out somewhere later if the skies clear. Image

I'm no expert, just repeating what I've read elsewhere, but it's all to do with the sun's activity. It varies all the time and apparently about once a decade the stuff it ejects out (technical term!) that cause the lights is sufficient for the Aurora to be visible down here.
I know someone who saw them in Berkshire in 2003.
Although like you, it's completely passed me by before.
I think in this age of the internet and social media in particular, it's much easier for those in the know to spread the word and enable far more people who would have missed these events to get to hear about them and go and look for themselves.

Yeah weather's rubbish. Typical. Here we've got a combination of thick cloud, drizzle and light fog. Can't see the sky clearing tonight.

Little green men could be doing somersaults in flying saucers overhead tonight and we wouldn't see a thing. :(
