Stag Beetle, a pic at last!
Flew across the garden around 8 tonight, stopped for a min. on some dead twigs.
Snapped a few shots with my iPad camera from 15ft away, the closest I could get before it buzzed off! It was followed a few mins later by a female that was photo shy.

Or are your NHS lenses not up to it

I can just about make out the 'horns' and blurry wings, but only because you said there's a stag beetle in the pic!You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Here is another pic of the same beetle, flying this time
You can tell its flying because the wings are all blurred males fly in a vertical position because their jaws are so heavy.
Andy Great pic of the pigeon, what did you take it with?

What! To be fair you left the barn door open (or should I say Grants boat door).
Tip hold the camera steady and let the bug crawl like this one I keep in a white box. Used to see them in Hertfordshire as a kid. I guess most areas have been turned into housing.

I have it in good authority that they can found in certain woods in Hertfordshire and around the Hitchen area.
My place is built on the edge of a field, the old trees along the boundary (now the bottom of my garden) had fallen down long before the houses were built but the roots remain and it is in those roots that the beetles have lived for decades. Mine just pop up through the lawn and borders, starting around now and going on into September.
I had a pile of old sticks I had heaped over a heap of moss I raked from the lawn, the idea being to attract a hedgehog but when I looked inside the moss there were a colony of these beetles.
All the shots are with an iPad.
My last camera was a Brownie 127
