Ratting tonight
Got a email today from a beef farm I do pest control on haven't been due to lock down and work commitments. Was given written permission and approval to go shooting as pest control was and essential part of the farm management and production of food. Its three weeks since I've been and was shocked how quickly rat numbers have increased. Shot over 70 in two hours. Only stopped as night vision batteries went flat! That's the most I have shot on my own in one night everywhere I looked I saw them. Could have shot alot more but too many cows in the sheds for safe shots.

Good work
That will teach you to carry some spares, atleast the 70 you did account for wont be around to cause future problems.
What tools are you using?

Went to the recycling centre two nights after in two separate vehicles me and my mate got approx 200 between us then went back to the farm and got another 30! They say pike thrive on neglect but rats do even more!!!

The rats were definitely spooked making loads of squeaking but were just running through at one point 15 ran through an entrance point but not stopped. Only got approx 30 last night. Will rest it for a few weeks then have another bash at them.Jeezus serious numbers, you see any monster rats in amongst them or are they similar stamp?

lucky chap, i lost my farm permisssion when i moved jobs 4 yrs ago, and had to make do with plinking and the very occasional stray rat into my garden. The usual letters to land owners and farm yards around my area have not yielded any joy unfortunately.

Farmers rarely reply to letters!
Mail is sorted into essentials like grants and income streams, non essentials such as leisure interests, and fire lighters.
Would you reply to a faceless wonder asking to use a firearm on your property? No you wouldn't!
Get on your bike and pay a visit, no gun, no camo gear, just conservative dress and a polite approach and you will find it can achieve more than any number of letters.
Take along a CV, a photograph and references and dont expect an instant response as background checks take time.

Re: Ratting tonight
I’ve sent letters before with self addressed envelope inside, sent about 6 and got one blinding permission at a hall, regularly used to get 20 rabbits and a few squirrels of a evening, the place was over run, never found farmers hospitable when rocking up and looking for them and you can understand why really as the next bloke or bloke before was probably on the rob, my best permissions came from friends of friends, had 800 acre golf course at one point gained that way, never easy to get permission but you only need to get the nod once, keep trying, maybe wear a tie, good luck

Re: Ratting tonight
That's my experience tbh, which is why a letter with job & family details etc are my method, albeit failing....problem is that in an semi urban area like where I live, any form of shooting is frowned unless it's at the ranges.

Re: Ratting tonight
I always had a line on my written permission form that stated "This permission can be withdrawn without notice or reason". The farmers approved of this.

Back to subject.
A villian arrived three days ago and started pillaging the bird food in broad daylight.
I staked down an apple and it started on it overnight, arrested with 0.48gms and interred the following morning.
Way to go LGU.

Only good rat is a dead rat, they seem to be popping up everywhere at minute, must be due to all the food outlets being closed and they got no fast food to scoff. Been getting plenty just lately, great for the bait stations though, Foxes love em

I think you might be right about their loss of fast food leftovers, after the winter clear-up the earliest Ive previously killed a rat is 28 Sept. (post harvest)
I recycle by feeding to my beans, my runners thrive on them
