Pond Advice Please

My father in law passed away recently at the ripe old age of 90 after a short battle with bone cancer, the little pond in his back garden is below, my wife took a couple of snaps today.

It's got goldfish in and a couple of small Koi Carp. But my "Mum" mentioned the water is getting a green tinge to it. I've never kept a pond, what can I do to keep it healthy. The old girl is 87 and is fine feeding the fish, but she said to my wife "Your Dad would not be happy with this" Any advice please gents.

Mesh bag of barley straw will keep it in check!
You can sometimes twirl it around a stick to remove it if it’s really thick.

And stop that gnome from taking a leak in it too!

As simple as that? Even I can't screw that up thank you. The gnome is not an issue, it's the lads drop-shotting we worry about hence the no fishing sign that Dad put up.

Put a note in your diary and get the barley in early next year and that will stop it from blooming in the first place!
Try not to feed them too much either the excrement can cause algea too!

I feed mine once every 10 days , they go torpid this time of year.

The pond looks pretty mature so there will be natural food in there too

Sorry for your loss Monts.
Quick observation and I don't mean the shark trying to escape. But the pump is not running.
He may have kept the pump running which goes through the filter box at the house end.
Excess sediment can help feed the algae
As others have mentioned barley straw will help. Stuff a hessian or nylon sack with it and the bacteria it promotes will help control suspended algae. Running water through a UV lamp works 100%.
Green water won't kill the fish just means you can't see them. Dirty water rich in ammonia and nitrates is what fish don't like.

Check the pump is running, if not get it going again.
There may be a uv light in the lid of the filter box. There would be a electric supply to the lid if there is a light (I cant see if there is in the photo).
If there is a uv light then this working would combat the green water (you should be able to see it glow at night if its working) the lamp also needs to be replaced every spring so you should renew that now.
If not you can treat the water with barley straw but this takes a month to start working.
You could also treat the water with "algiclear" made by New technology if the filter is working for a quick fix for the green water.
The Filter box probably needs cleaning too. Take the sponges out and wash with a hose. The remaining bio filter in the box needs removing and rinsing in bucket of pond water (this has bacteria growing on it which break down the ammonia so dont clean too much or with tap water, just rinse the worst off).

Just a very quick update, pump is now back on.Filter cleaned and Barley Straw has been in just over a week now, it says with the instructions it takes up to 4 weeks to work and needs rinsing off occasionally. Fish are fine and the clarity is the improving. Thanks for the advice, my wife and 'Mum' are happy, so that's them off my back until the next thing.
