Itchy dog

Post by greencard1 »

My staffie cross usually gets itchy in the Spring, and I give him one or two anti-histamine tablets a day.

This year he got itchy as usual, but it has carried on since the Spring, and he is scratching and biting all of the time. The anti-histamines help. but is there anything else I can do for him?

His flea treatment is up to date, and I have not changed his food.

Yumove has an anti-itch liquid to put on food, does it work?

Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks
John.

My lab had similar problems for 4 yrs , various lotions and creams from the vets , + expensive tablets (€80 a month ) .
Along with regular washing eased it but didn`t stop it .

Change of vet and change of tablet (Prednicortone) , €20 a month .
All clear for the last year , haven`t seen him scratch once since , like a new dog !

Might he have a parasite or mites ie. mange. Might be worth dosing him for that too. Cover all avenues.

Thanks for that. I think the effipro that I treat him with is supposed to kill mites.

He has not lost any hair. He is mostly white and sheds quite a lot all year round.

I have heard that white dogs are more likely to itch.

Yes, I think it is an allergy and not parasite related.

Thanks.

Bloody dog is itchy again, scratching and nibbling his legs.
Last year the vet said it was the 'year of the itchy dogs' and they did not know why.
It's too early in the year to be pollen. He also likes to eat a bit of soil at this time of the year????

Back on the antihistamines, but would like to know why he is itching.

Cheers. John.
