Possible solution to timeouts and connection errors

Post by Andrew Croft » Sun Mar 04 2018 17:25

ive put together a little how-to on changing dns settings which I hope might work for those having big problems connecting. grant im looking at you

if you're not sure about this be careful :smile: its simple enough to revert back if things go wrong.

dns, to keep it simple, resolves the domain names you type in your browser (the-pikers-pit.co.uk) in to the actual ip address of the server needed to connect. you're router contains dns settings that are probably pointing to a dns service provided by your host but not all dns providers get it right and we sometimes get problems like this. should be very rare but hey ho.

so if those of you affected baddly by this want to give this a try heres how to change your dns settings to one of two providers that seem to be pretty good. it pains me to suggest it but one of them is run by google :roll:

How to change DNS settings using googles dns servers

1
first navigate to your control panel. from "View by:" select large icons and click network and sharing.

2.
Click "change network adapter" from the left hand side.

you might have a few things here.
- local area connection (if you are connected to the internet by that cat5 cable or ethernet cable)
- Wireless network connection (if you have wifi on pc)
determine how you are connected to the net and right click the appropriate one then click "Properties"

3.
a new window pops up from here we need to do two things. look at both:
internet protocol version 4 (tpc/ipv4)
internet protocol version 6 (tpc/ipv6)

We are going to change both of these. first though select ipv6 and click on "properties"

4.
when the properties for ipv6 appear click on the radio button "use the following DNS server address"
use these details as follows

preferred DNS server: 2001:4860:4860::8888
Alternative Dns server: 2001:4860:4860::8844

click ok

5.
we should see this screen again:

Select ipv4 and we are going to do the same as before. click on the radio button "use the following DNS server address"
use these details as follows
preferred DNS server: 8.8.8.8
Alternative Dns server: 8.8.4.4

click ok, close all other windows/control panel etc and reboot to be on the safe side. with any luck anyone having connection issues should now be sorted.

Important:
if you now find yourself with no internet go back to the ipv4 & 6 settings and select "OBTAIN DNS SERVER ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY" from here:

an alternative to google dns server is opendns
their ipv4 addresses are:
preferred DNS server: 208.67.222.222
Alternative Dns server: 208.67.220.220

they're ipv6 seems to be lacking something, you probably dont actually need to set ipv6 but they are:
preferred DNS server: 2620:0:ccc::2
Alternative Dns server: 2620:0:ccd::2

Btw if you want this to take affect across all your devices then skip doing it on the pc and change them directly in your routers dns settings.
