Attn; rod builders and refurbers

Post by Mike J »

Has anyone experience in gap filling on cork handles?

A lovely rod with a medium quality cork handle, some rings have come loose and gapes have appeared all over the cork.
I do not want to fit a new handle, just refurb the cork handle to produce a smooth workable surface.
I have Rod Bond to reglue the loose rings.

Thanks in advance,

.

Not sure what the problem is. Pics?

I use Gorilla Glue for cork as it expands to fill gaps and is sort of cork-coloured. Needs care to stop it expanding everywhere though!

Could you mix cork dust with pva glue, pva dries clear so it will dry cork coloured.

Brown coloured wood filler might do the job plus a little sanding. Sounds like the cork has become overly dry, so I'd soak the cork in water to see if that helps, and then avoid storing it near radiators etc. I don't know where the rods been stored, but I'd avoid putting it near radiators etc.

You've done extremely well there for £15 Mike.

I've seen people asking three times that for them at car boots! (And they're easily worth it).

Got it on a whim, the excuse is to complete a pair, the other I found in Cash Converters for £25 completely unused! The colour of those blanks is a joy to behold.

Just needs filler by the look of things. Any of the methods suggested should work. I've used cork dust mixed into Gorilla Glue, epoxy and PVA. All worked. Mix so mostly cork.

Only thing wrong with those rods are the plastic sliding reel fittings. Stripped the rings from mine and fitted a screw fitting. I managed to strip the whippings off leaving the PAINTED(!) gold tippings in place and re-whipped up to them. Also managed to snap the quiver tip and repaired it just as JW did in one of his programmes.

They are among the most aesthetically pleasing rods of their era Mike. As you say, the green blanks are a joy to behold.

More importantly, they are also a pleasure to fish with.

I have a pair of the first model John Wilson 11ft 1 1/4 tc 'Specialist' rods - the ones with full cork handles. Also the 11-13' 'Avon/Quiver System'. All from new.

I also have (somewhere) a pair of the JW 12', 2 3/4 tc Pike rods. I made the mistake of taking them to Ireland and leaving them in the 'care' of my hare-brained twin brother Rob (it's his highly artistic temperament :laughs: ).

Apparently, they're safe in somebody's loft - if only he could remember who's! :dizzy:

(I'd really like those back, as I had my Bough Beech 30 on one of them, back in '93  ).
